A Reflection'
on Racism

Editor, The Jewish News:
A few years ago, I was
teaching high school adult
education in an all-black
environment. In the class
was a young lady in her late
30s who had taken a liking
to me as she sensed I was
sincere in helping her with
all educational problems.
Our mutual friendship
developed at each class
meeting, and her past ex-
periences, as related to me,
included professional danc-
ing in many cities of the
world and also secretary to
the late Malcom X. Part of
our non-educational dis-
cussions centered upon the
philosophies of Malcolm X
and I remember stating to
her that I was familiar with
his works but didn't under-
stand the contents.
At our last meeting, she
asked me to answer a per-
sonal question: "When you
first saw me, what did you
see?" My response was, "A
nice woman." Whereupon
she replied "I was certain
you would say 'a black per-
son.' "
I remember that incident
when I think of racism be-
cause the woman was a nice
young black lady and I was
the white teacher.
