Zionist Dream
Is Still Realistic
NEW YORK — Weiz-
mann Institute Prof. Leo
Sachs, recipient of the 1983
Bristol-Meyers Award for
Cancer Research, says that
the "old Zionist dream" of
building a Jewish state with
a better social system —
which inspired his aliya to
Israel over 30 years ago —
"is as realistic and actual
today as it was when first
enunciated."
Prof. Sachs, director of
the Genetics Department of
the Weizmann Institute of
Science in Rehovot, Israel,
expressed this view at a
dinner in honor of his re-
ceiving the award for a
series of landmark dis-
coveries in cancer research.
The award carries a cash
prize of $50,000. •
He pioneered in develop-
ing a process that can
change leukemic cells from
malignant to normal.
