Study Lists Sephardi Gains

roles in the Israeli Knesset,
in the Political parties and
in the Cabinet is rising sig-
nificantly, according to a re-
cent study commissioned by
the American Jewish

This rise in leadership
roles is reflected elsewhere
as well. The number of
commissioned officers in the
police force has risen from
less than four percent in
1955 to more than 25 per-
cent today, with some now
acting as district comman-
ders and chiefs of national
operations. The same may
be said of the Israel Defense
Force, where, in 1955, there
were no Sephardic Jewish
generals and today there
are five major generals and
at least 13 brigadier gener-
als.
The report was prepared
by Harry M. Rosen, veteran
social scientist, in consulta-
tion with Dr. Sammy
Smooha, Haifa University
sociology professor.

The study shows that
while the rise in positions of
leadership is uneven, the
growth on an overall basis
has been steady.

will be installed as
president.
Dr. Lavine has served as
editor, treasurer, recording
secretary and president-
elect of AO. He is an active
member of the Macomb
County Dental Society and
past president of the Michi-
gan Chapter of the Society
of Psychosomatic Dentistry.
Other officers to be in-
stalled are: Dr. Joel
Schaumberg, president-
elect; Dr. William Lukacs,
treasurer; Dr. Marvin
Sonne, treasurer-elect; Dr.
Douglas Shiffman, record-
ing secretary; Dr. Sue Car-
ron Simon, corresponding
secretary; Dr. Mark Luria,
editor; Dr. Ron Berris,
assistant editor; and Dr.

Larry Mintzer, parliamen-
tarian.
Also being honored and
installed at this "black tie
optional" evening are the
incoming officers of the De-
troit Auxiliary of AO and
the student chapters of AO
at the dental schools of the
Universities of Detroit and
Michigan.

1983 "Israeli Olympiad"
reached almost $2.5 mil-
lion, much income was gen-
erated from public
attendance at sports events
featuring 1,060 athletes
from 35 countries.
Romanian participation
in gymnastics and swim-
ming clinics run by Olympic
and Hapoel champion Mark
Spitz generated special at-
tention, as did a China-
Israel table tennis match.
