Council of Orthodox Rabbis
-- at the Westin Hotel
Wednesday evening, there
was a renewed assignation:
That learning must con-
tinue as an obligation of,
Jews to Jews;
That the education of
children Jewishly must
have priority;
That the youth must be
inspired with devotion,
with loyalty to traditions,
with a rejection of the
mixed-marriages trend.
This was the theme of the
principal speaker of the
evening, Rabbi Leizer Le-
vin, dean of the Orthodox
rabbis here, in his Yiddish
address that set the tone for
the night's activities.
His message was
endorsed in the introduc-
tory remarks of the eve-
ning's chairman, Paul Bor-
man.
It even had an echo in the
entertaining address of the
eminent humorist, Alan
King, who emphasized his
Jewishness as a record of
family enthusiasm in Yid-
dishkeit.
It was concurred in by
Ivan Bloch who intro-
duced King, and David
Holtzman, who made a
presentation to the hon-
oree of the evening
Harold Beznos.
The theme had special
acclaim in the greeting in
behalf of the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation by its
president, Judge Avern
Cohn.
In appreciation of Beznos'
many services to the com-
munity, a group of Vaad
leaders joined Holtzman in
honoring Beznos and Rabbi
James Gordon gave him, as
a memento, a hand-
inscribed Megilat Esther.
Beznos, who has attained
leadership in many Jewish
movements, said his appre-
ciation of the honors ac-
corded him can only be ex-
pressed in his continuous
labors for the advancement
of the highest Jewish ideals.
Paul ZuCkerman recited
the HaMotzi. Frank Beznos
led in the Benshen. Cantor
Hyman Adler sang the na-
tional anthems.
