Lebanon, the Holocaust and the Media

By REV. FRANKLIN
LITTELL
National Institute
on the Holocaust

PHILADELPHIA — A
small newspaper item re-
ports that the assassin of
Bashiz Gemayel has been
located. Most newspapers
have not carried the item at
all. None has given it the
front page, headline treat-
ment which they have ac-
corded reports and rumors
and invented reports hostile
to Israel.

When Bashir Gemayel —
who alone possessed the
authority to hold Lebanon
together and thwart the
Russian/PLO ambitions in
that area — was assassi-
nated, the terrorist Arafat
immediately accused Israel
of the deed. His press con-
ference was well attended.
So also was his press session
to accuse Israel of master-
minding the bombing and
murders at the American
Embassy in Beirut.
CBS, which like the other
mass media seized the
opportunity to assault Is-
rael for the police action
against the terrorists in
Lebanon, has recently ad-
mitted publicly its false-
hoods in a 60-minute pro-

gram. The admission did
not come, however, in refer-
ence to their doctoring the
news about Lebanon, but
about the conduct of Gen-
eral Westmoreland during
the American police action
in Vietnam.
General Westmoreland
has powerful friends:
even CBS has to take
note. But not so the IDF in
Lebanon. By refusing to
publish the statements of
prominent Christian
leaders who support Is-
rael, and therefore creat-
ing the impression that
only Jews despise ter-
rorism and love Israel (a
lie by implication), the
mass media attempts to
insure itself against any
appearance of wide-
spread and interfaith
outrage at their mendac-
ity. They think the public
at large will not come to
"merely Jewish" pro-
tests.
The assassin of Bashir
Gemayel turns out to be a
member of a Syria-
sponsored terrorist gang.
Syria, a Russian depen-
dency, occupied most of
Gemayel's country after an
invasion in 1975 — and,
with PLO assistance, killed
over 100,000 people who be-
longed in Lebanon (as they
did not). This the media ig-
nored at the time, later to
attribute much of the devas-
tation of 1975-1976 to the
IDF action in 1982.
To me, visiting Junieh,
Alley, Tyre and Sidon and
other places during the Is-
raeli police action was an
education in journalistic
ethics. It is an uncanny feel-
ing to see a city virtually in-
tact, a city which jour-
nalists have reported as "to-
tally destroyed," "another
Dresden," etc.
My objection to the media
handling of the IDF police
action in Lebanon is not

that their editorials were
biased: their unconscious
and unexamined anti-
Semitism is, unfortunately,
to be expected in a society
that has not yet drawn the
knife on its Kulturan-
tisemitismus.

The major newspapers
are not, with a few excep-
tions, deliberately anti-
Semitic: they are simply
suffering from the
malaise of centuries of
unthinking anti-
Semitism in Chris-
tendom. But the slanting
of news reports, the pub-
lishing of news items full
of rumors and false
"facts," the prominence
given the wildest in-
terpretations of "high
government officials who
ask not to be identified"
(!), the failure to include
important countervailing
information, the
wholesale lying — yes, let
it be called by its true
name: lying! — reveals a
lack of professional
ethics which is appalling.

One of the lessons of the
Holocaust is this: the atten-
tion to technical skills, to
cleverness, in total aban-
donment of wisdom and
truth, is the besetting sin of
the professions today. The
journalists are not alone in
this: physicists, theolo-
gians, engineers, teachers,
doctors, lawyers and other
technicians of the Third
Reich equally displayed the
corruption of Wissenschaft.
But we are speaking now
of journalism. What do they
learn in school beyond
grabbing the headlines at
all costs, if necessary in dis-
regard of the truth? If sheer
skillfull technology is the
only standard, they should
admit frankly that that
master technician, Josef
Goebbels, is their patron
saint.
