One of the world's
foremost designers of major
museums and exhibits,
John Gardner of London,
England, has been commis-
sioned to design the interior
of Detroit's Holocaust
Memorial Center.
Gardner, whose appoint-
ment was announced by
Henry Dorfman, chairman
of the HMC executive com-
mittee, was the designer of
Beth Hatefutsoth, the
Museum of the Diaspora, in
Tel Aviv. He has executed
other major projects in
England, the United States,
Israel and Holland.
For the Brussels World
Fair, Gardner designed the

the Holocaust, shows what
occurs when human beings

He plans to dramatize
the evolution and glory of
Jewish culture and Hit-
ler's attempt to destroy
that culture. An impor-
tant part of the Center
will be an archives of the
Jewish communities of
Eastern Europe. Visitors
will be able to call up the
records of any of several
hundred communities.
To compile those records,

In addition to his many
other credits, Gardner was

During World War II,

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The Supreine Court ordered
Finance Minister Yoram
Aridor on Monday to show
cause why Israeli Arab
families should not receive
the same child care
allowances as the rest of the
population. He has 45 days
to reply. The court acted on
a petition filed by two Arab
Knesset members,
Mohammad Wattad and
Hammad Halaili, both of
the Labor Alignment.
They were appealing
against a recent decision by
the Knesset Finance Com-
mittee to increase the
allowances to families with
three or more children. The
decision was discriminat-
ory, the complainants said,
because the increase is to
apply only for children of
yeshiva students or army
veterans. There are no
Arabs in either category.
Wattad is the father of
seven children and Halaili

search, Leo Baeck Insti-
tute, Yad Vashem and
Beth Hatefutsoth.
It is expected that the
Holocaust Memorial Center
interior will be completed
within a year. A major
endowment campaign is
underway to help ensure
the acquisition and mainte-
nance of historical, mate-
rials, as well as arrange-
ment of creative programm-
ing.
The community is being
invited to enroll as mem-
bers of the HMC in several
categories. For information,
call the HMC, 661-0840.
