Using this recipe, many
Israelis are turning their
scruffy, dry backyards and
bare roofs into Gardens of
Eden.
Garden owners lacking
even the most basic hor-
ticultural knowledge are
growing magnificent be-
gonias, fuchsias, philoden-
drons and other shade-
loving plants in bright sun-
lighLand lemon trees that
produce first fruits after one
year instead of the conven-
tional three or four.
Noam Blum, an indus-
trial engineer . who
created, patented and
now markets the system
through his company,
Michzur Ltd. of Kfai Giv-
ton, claims that the
dramatic growth results
are due to complete pre-
cision in delivering exact
amounts of water and
liquid fertilizers needed
by individual plants at
regular, electropically
controlled intervals.
A small, pocket-sized
computer plans the
amounts of water and fer-
tilizer needed, taking into
account the temperature of
the air, type of soil and other
variables, as supplied to it
by the garden owner. The
liquid mixture is delivered
through small black plastic
tubes which lie on the soil
and are punctuated with
drippers directed at the
roots of each plant. - -
In roof situations, the
garden is based on prefabri-
cated concrete sectional

containers in different
shapes. Flowers, shrubs and
trees grow in a medium
called 'tuff' — gray, absor-
bent, volcanic pebbles
which provide excellent
aeration. After plants take
the nourishment they need,

the leftover water and fer-
tilizers are recycled. Since
plants absorb only what
they need in the closed sys-
tem, cactus and tropical
greenery, vegetables and
fruit can be grown within .
the same unit.

Feeding is designed to
stunt root growth in order to
keep roots container-size:
larger trees and shrubs are
affixed to walls and lattices
to compensate for root sup-
port.
-
Although Blum and his
team of landscape ar-
chitects, engineers and
agronomists specialize in
soil-less hydroponic roof
gardens, traditional
earth-based gardens are
also thriving with the
same effortless method,
which in this case in-
volves the use of addi--
tional drip lines to ac-
commodate a greater
variety of plants and
conditions.
Installation of the closed
system on roofs, including
all equipment and plants,
costs up to $4,000 for a 1,000
square foot space. Gardens
on the ground cost about
half that amount, and the
company will soon be com-
ing out with a balcony-sized

NEW YORK -- P.E.F. Is-
rael Endowment Funds dis-
bursed more than $5 million
to 297 institutions in Israel
during the 1982 fiscal year,
according to the philan-
thropic organization's an-
nual report.
Included in the funds dis-
tributed by the organiza-
tion, which is now 60 years
old, was $252,684 in schol-
arship money to Israeli high
school students preparing
for college.

Pilots to Hold
Parley in Israel

TEL AVIV' (JNI) — The
annual conference of the in-
ternational association of
pilots in Dublin, Ireland,
has decided to hold their in-
ternational convention in
Israel next march.
About 180 pilots will par-
ticipate. Arab and Soviet
representatives angrily left
the conference when the de-
cision on the Tel Aviv loca-
tion was accepted.

closed system that will cost
from $700 to $1,000.
Once the system and
plants are in place, the
owner adds fertilizers
weekly, although it is possi-
ble to let the system operate
on its own for up to six
weeks.
