THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

leak' and Sharon Bond Function

Leaks are not limited to
the national scene. .
Melodramatic effects of
one such occurrence were
demonstrated in Birming-
ham Wednesday.
"Unwanted guests" in the
form of television crews con-
fronting the home of Mar-
lene and Paul Borman gave
evidence of the media devo-
tions to search for a news
story. Reporters and editors
of the local newspapers
asked for a look at and a
chat with the most dis-
cussed man in world news in
recent months, the famous
general and hero of the Yom
Kippur War and the target
in the Kahan Inquiry
Commission Report on the
Beirut tragedy, former Is-
rael Defense Minister Ariel
(Arik) Sharon, who was to
have been the guest at the
private Borman party on
behalf of the Israel Bonds.
The genesis of the
localized sensation was in
the national office of Israel
Bonds, in a news release
announcing that "Sharon is
coming." From the moment
the New York Times re-
ported, April 28, that De-
troit was on the Sharon
itinerary, the media search
began, for the where-and-

ARIEL SHARON

when. There are no secrets
and the "nagging" brought
results. But the Borman
party remained private and
the TV crews were watching
from the outside for a possi-
ble photographic glimpse at
the Israeli hero. Then came
the news: Sharon arrived,
but was called to return
home immediately.
Sharon had already
spoken at a public meet-
ing in Boston on Sunday
evening. He was due at
the Emunah Women's
convention at Grossing-
er's on Sunday and at
several other functions
during his U.S. visit.

Court Jails Timerman's Son

TEL AVIV (JTA) —
Daniel Timerman, 31-
year-old son of former
Argentine publisher and
human rights activist
Jacobo Timerman, was sen-
tenced by a military court to
35 days in jail for refusing to
serve with the Israeli army
in Lebanon for reasons of
conscience.
A military spokesman
confirmed the sentence but
declined to comment
further. It was the younger
Timerman's second jail sen-
tence in seven months for
refusing military duty in
Lebanon. He was jailed for
28 days last October.
More than 35 other Is-
raeli soldiers have been sen-
tenced to jail terms for the

same reason since Israel in-
vaded Lebanon last June.
Jacobo Timerman, once
editor and publisher of a
leading Buenos Aires daily,
La Opinion, was arrested in
1977 and imprisoned for 29
months for opposing the
military junta that ruled
Argentina and exposing the
"disappearances" of
thousands of other political
opponents. He was released
in 1979, stripped of citizen-
ship and deported after his
property, including the
newspaper, was confiscated
by the government.
•Daniel Timerman im-
migrated to Israel with his
father that year. Both
strongly oppose the war in
Lebanon.

He made it to Detroit on
Wednesday at about 6 p.m.,
only to be greeted with the
message, "come back home
for the emergency cabinet
meeting," from Prime
Minister Menahem Begin.
Meanwhile, at the airport
and at the Borman home,
there was massive security
provided by the Michigan
State Police.
Sharon had a telephone
chat with Paul Borman, ex-
pressing regret at his ina-
bility to fulfull his mission
here.
The 130 at the "private
party" meanwhile pro-
vided the devotional re-
sponse to the Israeli
Bonds appeal. The wel-
coming address by Paul
Borman, the analysis of
Israel's needs with the
aid of Bonds funds by the
new local chairman, D.
Dan Kahn, and the inspi-
rational address by
David Hermelin, national
Israel Bonds co-
chairman, brought re-
sponses from more than
80 percent of the
gathered guests.
Also speaking was Jack
Shenkman, who had been
scheduled to introduce Sha-
ron to the gathering.
In his chat with Borman
over the telephone from the
airport expressing regret
that he could not deliver his
message to the Detroit
Jewish community, Sharon
punned, "If you want me, I
can be back in 48 hours."

Tel Aviv Stargazing Leads to Breakthrough

Israel Scene
While studying the pulsa-
tions emitted by stars one
day, Tel Aviv University
physics and astronomy Prof.
Dror Sadeh mused that they
seemed remarkably similar
to the pulsations of the
human heart.
The result of that connec-
tion was a modification of
the instrument used for
measuring pulsars, to a pro-
totype for examining

(Il

system.
Still in _the prototype
stage, the new heart-
assessment instrument
may prove to be another
example of commercial suc-
cess stemming from Israeli
ingenuity.
