The author of this F.D.R.
biography could not have
had the facts regarding the
believed Roosevelt Jewish
roots. They are told in the
record compiled by the
editor of The Jewish News
and had been mentioned in
previous publications in
which the Roosevelt story
was recounted.

Rose Agree, a member of
Jewish communal organ-
izations, died April 29 at
age 94.
Born in Russia, Mrs.
Agree was a life-long
member of Temple Beth El
and its sisterhood, Pioneer
Women/Naamat and
Zedekah Club.
She leaves three daugh-
ters, Mrs. Max (Estelle) Mil-
ler, and Mrs. Jack (Evelyn)
Nover and Mrs. Sidney
(Melba) Wisch; a brother,
William Garelik; a sister,
Mrs. Maurice (Diana) Sills;
nine grandchildren and 13
great-grandchildren.

deported after defying a ban
on his entering Britain.

A native of Russia, Mr.
Smertenko was brought to
the U.S. as a child. He
served in the Ambulance
Corps and became a balloon
observer for the Army in
World War

He was the author of two
books and a professor of
English at Barnard, Skid-
more and Hunter Colleges.
