The patterns repeat those of the 1981-1982 academic year when 19 women and 18 men were studying for the rabbinate at the Recon- structionist Rabbinical Col- lege (RRC) and a total of 120 men and 69 women were studying for the rabbinate at the Hebrew Union College-Jewihs Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR). The RCC, at Wyncote, Pa., has 22 women and 20 men studying for the rabbi- nate this academic year, while the HUC-JIR in Cin- cinnati has 126 men and 70 women studying for the rabbinate. Among the women scheduled for ordination as Reform rabbis from the He- brew Union College later this month is Southfield resident Jill Colman Rus- kin. Nuclear Freeze Drive Launched WASHINGTON (JTA) — A nationwide campaign to mobilize support for ending the nuclear arms race was launched by the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (UAHC), re- presenting 760 Reform syn- agogues in the United States and Canada, with publication of a 307-page manual titled, "Preventing the Nuclear Holocaust — A Jewish Response." The drive was announced last week by Harris Gilbert of Westfield, N.J., chairman of the Commission on Social Action of Reform Judaism, at a news conference. Gil- bert said the UAHC would work with Catholic, Protes- tant and other Jewish reli- gious groups in behalf of a "mutual, verifiable nuclear freeze." A n J a g • g Group to Keep Women as Focus of UN Parley WASHINGTON — Lead- ers of 12 major Jewish women's organizations met in Washington last month for a preliminary planning meeting on the United Na- tions End Decade Confer- ence on Women slated to be held in Nairobi, Kenya in 1985. The meeting marked the beginning of an effort by the women's groups to see that the conference focuses on women's issues and is not turned into a forum for air- ing Middle East disputes. At the 1980 conference in Copenhagen and at the first UN Conference on women in Mexico City repeated resolutions were introduced equating Zionism with ra- cism.
