Ceausescu Trip to Israel Sought
Before Begin Visits Romania
tween Israel and the Pales-
tine Liberation Organiza-
tion. Romania was involved
in the behind-the-scenes ac-
tivity which preceded the
late Egyptian President
Anwar Sadat's visit to
Jerusalem in November
1977.
Begin's first visit to
Romania six years ago fol-
lowed his first official trip to
Washington as Israel's
newly elected premier. It
turned out to have been part
of the preliminary negotia-
tions that brought about
Sadat's historic move. Be-
JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Romanian President
Nicholae Ceausescu has in-
vited Premier Menahem
Begin to visit Bucharest.
But-Begin reportedly is in-
sisting that Ceausescu come
to Israel first, to return the
visit he made to Bucharest
in August 1977.
The invitation was deliv-
ered to Begin by a personal
emissary of the Romanian
President last month. The
timing is significant in light
of reports that Ceausescu is

an invitation to Ceausescu
to come to Jerusalem but
the Romanian leader has
yet to 'do so.
Nevertheless, he has
maintained regular contact
with Begin through per-
sonal emissaries who visit
Jerusalem periodically, in
secret. The emissary who
was here last week repor-
tedly assured Begin that
Romania would not apply
its new education tax to
Romanian Jews immigrat-

Israeli Producers Replace 'Trash'
With 'Class' at Cannon Studio
NEW YORK — The Can-
non Group, a studio con-
trolled by two Israeli
cousins, has grown into one
of the biggest and most suc-
cessful independent movie
production companies in
Hollywood, according to the
New York Times.
The Times profiled Can-
non president Yoram
Globus and chairman
Menahem Golan in its busi-
ness section last month.
During the past four
years, the Times reported,
the tandem has moved ag-
gressively into the Amen-
can market. Golan, 52,
whose work was a director
helped lay the foundation of
the Israeli movie industry,
and Globus, his 39 year-old
cousin, are scheduled to
produce some 15 films this
year, about the same
number traditionally pro-
duced by the major studios.
Although Cannon has
made its reputation on
low-budget, exploitation
pictures that are primar-
ily designed for export to
other countries, the
studio has recently
begun to finance multi-
million dollar, "respect-
able" films with "big-
name" stars.
In 1982, the company
produced "That Cham-
pionship Season" and this
year it hopes to produce
"The Ultimate Solution of
Grace Quigley" with
Katherine Hepburn and
"Duet for One" with Faye
Dunaway.
It was in 1979 that Golan
and Globus bought a major-
ity interest in Cannon, then
a small, debt-ridden Ameri-
can studio. For its first two
years under the Israelis,
Cannon continued to lose
money. But last year, the
company, whose stock is
traded over the counter, re-
ported a net income of $2.5
million.
The next venture for the
company is an expansion
into television movies. A
mini-series based on the life
of Israel's Moshe Dayan is
being planned.
