sions! Come Let's Reason
Together," "Some Real Dif-
ferences? Come Let's
Understand One Another
and Why We Differ," "Get-
ting—Closer Together" and
"One Judaism?"
The purpose of this ac-
tivity book, according to
the editor, is not to learn
facts, but to challenge the
minds of both the teacher
and the student, and "to
probe and examine,
understand and ap-
preciate the major dif-
ferences of Judaism —
Reform, Orthodox, Con-
servative and Recon-
structionism."
One of. the "rounds". be-
gins with this allegorical
anecdote: "One upon a time,
six' blind people went to
examine an elephant for the
first time. One touched the
elephant's side and said:
`This feels like a wall.' An-
other felt the tusk and said:
" 'This feels like a spear.'
The third touched the trunk
and said: 'This feels like a
snake.' The fourth touched
the knee and said: 'This
feels like a tree.
"The fifth felt the ears
and said: 'This feels like a
fan.' The sixth felt the sw-
inging tail and said: 'This
feels like a rope.' "
The anecdote is fol-
lowed by the question:
"What's an elephant
story doing in a book on
Judaism?"
-
The student agreed that
concepts like Jewishness,
Zionism, Orthodoxy, Re-.
form and Conservative
Judaism represent substan-
tially more than we can say
about them," just as the
elephant is more than the
parts we may touch.
The "round" about "var-
ious things" is concerned
about beards, the talit and
the tefilin.
The "round" notes that in
the part Orthodox rabbis
wore beards "on the basis of
the verse in Levitucus
21:5." At present, however,
there are clean-shaven Or-
thodox rabbis, who, in order
not to violate the biblical
amendment commandment
on shaving, use a beard re-
moving powder.
On the basis of the
above statement, the stu-
dents are asked to draw
their own conclusions
"from this change."
Regarding the talit and
tefilin, the students are re-
quested to look up in an
encyclopedia and in prayer
books "unusual details
symbolizing certain basic
Jewish beliefs." In addition,
the students are asked to
talk to their rabbis about
their own personal practice

Syrians Buying
Israel Electronics

LONDON (ZINS) — The
London Sunday World
claims that sophisticated
electronic equipment with
military applications, made
in Israel, has found its way
to Syria.
The paper says the
equipment, manufactured
by Daga, was shipped to Ire-
land and then forwarded to
Syria by a Swis§ firm.

JIMMY LAUNCE PROductions
presents

regarding "talit and tefi-
lin."
This reviewer considers
"One People" by Abraham
Segal as a significant in-
structional aid. But I also
believe that the study and
interpretation of facts are
just as essential.
