Levy Defends Likud Record on Israel Social Problems

NEW YORK (JTA) —
"Whoever is against set-
D David Levy, Israel's Deputy tlements in - Judea and
Premier and Minister of Samaria would find a pre-
Housing, said in New York text, against this (settle-

investing on the West Bank is whether Israel govern-
are not at the expense of ments in the past invested
solving social problems in more in solving Israel's so-
Israel, cial problems than the pre-_

sent government. The an-
swer is no," Levy said at a
press conference.
Levy, who was invited to
the U.S. by Jewish organ-
izations to be guest of honor
at the "Salute to Israel"

Mrs. Veil Sees
Negative Image

PARIS (JTA) — Simone
Veil, a former President of
the European Parliament,
warned Sunday of serious,
steady deterioration of Is-
rael's image in European
circles.
Mrs. Veil said most Euro-
pean parliamentarians now
see Israel as "a colonial
power" and are unaware of
the history of Zionism and of
Israel's humanitarian phi-
losophy.
Speaking at a seminar for
Jewish intellectuals or-
ganized by the French
branch of the World Jewish
Congress, Mrs. Veil said she
has been observing this de-
terioration with "alarm and
concern." The situation has
become "catastrophic" in
recent months, she said.
