Immigrants Win HIAS Awards

Four young Soviet Jewish
emigres, including a hus-
band ,and wife team, re-
ceived the seventh Annual
Ann Petluck Awards from
HIAS. The winnders of the
three awards were an-
nounced at HIAS' 103rd an-

Yelena and Valery Man-
del, who shared one of three
prizes, migrated from the
Soviet Union in November
1979. Yelena is a graduate
student in the joint program
of the Jewish Theological
Seminary of America and

Milena Ragimzade left
the Soviet Union in 1981.
A resident of Baltimore,
she is a senior student at
Towson State University,
majoring in piano. She
has given concerts for a
number of Jewish com-
munal organizations and
synagogues.
Nonna Kaganovsky, 18,
left the Soviet Union with
her family in 1979. A resi-
dent of York, Pa. and a high
school senior, she plans to
study engineering. In 1981,
she won first place in the
mechanical drafting compe-
tition in the New York
County Industrial Show.
The awards, which each
have a $300 stipend, were
set up in memory of Ann
Petluck, who died in 1974. A
social work administrator
specializing in immigration
work, she is credited by
HIAS for having had a pro-
found influence on migra-
tion casework practice and
helping reshape federal
immigration laws.

Brith International's Com-
munity Volunteer Services
division has published a
manual that instructs
lodges, chapters and units
— as well as individuals —
how to serve the disabled
veterans.
The manual also tells
lodges how to promote their
services at VA hospitals and
advises youth groups.
