Semyon Bychkov to Conduct
Concert for Soviet Jewry

Semyon Bychkov, music
director of the Grand Rapids
Symphony Orchestra and
principal guest conductor of
the Buffalo Philharmonic
Orchestra, will conduct the
second annual Freedom
Concert for Soviet Jewry 8
p.m. May 10 at Adat Shalom
Synagogue.
Born in • Leningrad,
Bychkov began studying
music at age 5. He entered
the Leningrad Conservat-
ory of Music to study con-

upon graduation and was
the youngest candidate ever
to enter that renowned pro-

From 1972 to 1974,
Bychkov was conductor of
the school's symphony and
opera orchestra. In 1973, he
won first prize in the
Rachmanioff Conducting
Competition and became, in
1974, the first student ever
to be invited to conduct the
Leningrad Philharmonic.
In 1975, Bychkov and
his wife, Tanya, immig-
rated to the United
States. By 1977, Bychkov
made his American tele-
vision debut on the CBS
program, "Camera
Three," conducting the
CBS Chamber Orchestra.
The following year he

was invited for three con-
secutive years to be a
guest conductor of the Is-
rael Chamber Orchestra.
That same year he de-
buted at the Spoleto Fes-
tival USA in Charleston,
S.C.
In 1980-1981, Bychkov
marked his inaugural sea-
son as music director of the -
Grand Rapids Symphony
Orchestra.
The May 10 concert will
feature 47 members of the
Detroit Symphony Or-
chestra and David Bar-
Illan, Israeli pianist. For
