The Jewish Defense
League is seeking permis-
sion from the Oakland
County Road Commission
to hold an Israel Indepen-
dence Day parade 1 p.m.
May 1 on Maple Road, from
Henry Ford Hospital's West
Bloomfield center to the
main Jewish Community
Center.
The JDL parade would be
held at the same time as the
Jewish community's parade
and activities at the Center.
The JDL was denied per-
mission by the committee in
charge of the day's activities
from participating in that
event.
A spokesman for JDL told
The Jewish News that the
group is seeking to hold its
own parade and then gain
"equal access" to the Jewish
Community Center "for our
own festivities that day."
The spokesman said the
JDL is basing its request on
the non-discrimination pol-

icy of the Center.
The spokesman said
West Bloomfield Town-
ship has granted the JDL
a parade permit and
permission should be
granted routinely by the
county road commission
on Monday.
The spokesman said the
JDL is currently negotiat-
ing with the Center about
access to the facilities and is
seeking a written agree-
ment on the issue.
