Church Groups Hear Supporter of Israel By IDA JOYRICH eloquent address by Derek Prince, international Chris- tian leader and scholar, whose involvement with Jerusalem spans 40 years. Through his book, "Our Debt to Israel," and his spo- ken messages, Prince has awakened Christians throughout the world to their responsibility to Israel and the Jewish people. Prince was born in India, of British parents. During World War II, while serving as a hospital attendant with the British Army, he began a systematic reading of the Bible and eventually de- termined to devote the rest of his life to studying and teaching the Bible. At the end of World War II he re- mained where the British Army placed him — in Jerusalem. In a moving accounting of the events of May 14, 1948, Prince told the capacity audience of his experiences in witness- In a program called "For Love of Israel," Jews and Christians were asked to pray and to work for Jerusalem and for Israel. Who has ever heard of such a thing? Who has ever seen such things? Can a country be born in • a day, Or a nation be brought forth in a moment? "Here is a prophecy fulfil- led," said Prince, "and we witnessed it." With deep compassion and conviction, Prince re- veals the terrible brutal er- rors of Christian Churches through the centuries and the debt all Christians owe to the Jewish people. Mak- ing note that he was speak- ing Yom on HaShoa — "The Day of the Tempest" — he said, "We must accept our responsibility; we must make amends." The program began with a warm welcome by Dr. Loren Siffring, pastor of the Rochester Covenant Church, one of the sponsors of the day. Greetings were also of- fered by Mark D. Siljan- der, Michigan Con- gressman from the 4th District, who began his remarks with: "Shalom Chaverim!" Siljander, a member of the House Foreign Affairs Commit- tee and the Middle East Subcommittee, wore a blue and white arm band, which he wore that week to a Soviet Jewry rally in Washington. With great sincerity, Siljander ex- pressed "a love in my heart- and a commitment to the Jewish people and to Israel." Sol Lachman, past president of the Detroit Zionist Federation, gave a strong message on behalf of Israel and received a warm ovation from the audience and other participants. In his remarks, Pastor Robert Davis of the Christ The Redeemer Church, spoke of the need to build bridges of trust between people. In a dramatic reading of world history, Prince finished his address by references to Spain, whose great power diminished within a century of expel- ling all Jews from her ter- ritories; and more recently, within his own experiences, Great Britain, whose em- pire declined since 1948, without ever being defeated by war. As an eye-witness, living in Jerusalem at the time, Prince recounted British opposition and attempts to thwart the rebirth of Israel as a sovereign nation, and made poignant notice of the fact that from that moment in history, Britain's empire underwent a process of rapid decline and disinte- gration. Today, a genera- Corporations cannot commit treason, nor be out- lawed, nor excommuni- cated, for they have no souls. —Sir Edward Coke tion later, Britain - like Spain - is a struggling, sec- ond rate power. "The Middle East is of vital interest to the United States and the destiny of the U.S. is at stake," said Pr- ince. Pointing out that the Hebrew name for the United States is Artzot HaBrit — "The Lands of the Covenant" — Prince re- minded his audience that this nation is the product of a covenant made by Ameri- ca's founders and is commit- ted to their ideals. Army Prepared JERUSALEM (ZINS) — Gen. -Moshe Levi, Israel's chief of staff-designate, said recently in response to a re- porter's question that Israel is prepared for war with Syria this spring, "or at any other time." "That is our job," he said, adding that this does not mean that a war is expected.
