The Fresh Air Society has
withdrawn its advertising
from the Michigan Daily,
the University of Michi-
gan's student-run news-
paper, in response to what is
being called irresponsible
journalism on the part of the
paper's editorial staff.
Michael Zaks, executive
director of the FAS, said the
"normal end of our advertis-
ing is April," but the recent
article about so-called
"JAPs — Jewish American
Princesses" put a halt to any
future advertising by the
agency.
Zaks referred to an article
in a February Weekend edi-
tion of the Daily entitled,
" `JAPs': Are They Fact or
Fiction?" which applied a
grossly exaggerated and
negative stereotype to
Jewish women on campus.
"What he is printing is
inflammatory," Zaks
said. He called the article
"a cheap shot."
Zaks called the Daily's
editor-in-chief Barry Witt
"irresponsible" and in a
note to him said that what
he did -- running the article
— "isn't good press."

Last week, petitions bear-
ing more than 3,000 signa-
tures were presented to
Witt, calling for the paper to
admit it made an error in
judgment in publishing the
article.
The Hillel Foundation at
the University of Michigan
immediately withdrew its
advertising in 'response to
the article.
A • group calling itself
the Committee for a Re-
sponsible Michigan Daily
is calling for the paper's
editors to admit its error
in publishing the article
and to assure that it will
use better judgment in
the future.
Witt, meanwhile, said he
had no plans to print an
apology.
The Michigan Student
Assembly and the student
government of the univer-
sity's liberal arts college
backed the petition drive.
The paper falls under the
auspices of the Board for
Student Publications and is
independent of university
control. The paper is fi-
nanced through advertis-
ing, subscriptions and
newsstand sales.
