Dr. Weiss was guest of honor at a reception Wed- nesday by the Michigan Chapter of the American Friends of Hebrew Univer- sity, hosted by Dr. and Mrs. Abraham Becker. Dr. Weiss is director of Hebrew Uni- versity's Lautenberg Cen- ter for General and Tumor Immunology. He told The Jewish News that Israel "is ex- tremely well repre- sented" in the areas of basic biology, basic im- munology and basic cancer research. "Some 14-15 percent of all re- search articles published in these fields are by Is- raelis," the Vienna-born Dr. Weiss stated. He said the prevelance of Jews in these fields "is an outgrowth of the fundamen- tal value commitments of the Jewish people. If you look at the rosters of profes- sors at universities by disci- pline you will find many more Jewish names in those areas which change the human condition. "Jews try to improve the universe about them. They are prominent in certain fields while only an average number of Jews appear in other areas." Dr. Weiss cited specific areas such as the social sciL ences, psychology and sociology where Jews have made leading contributions. "Much of biological science, and insight into the soul, are 'Jewish' developments," he said. "This is oversimpli- fying, of course." He refused to predict when a major break- through in cancer pre- vention and cure would ake place. "I'll call you t wo weeks after it hap- pens," he joked. He said t hat 10-15 years ago there was a great deal of op- timism about a cure for ancer through im- munologic measures. He ompared the optimism t o Icarus and Dedalus in t he Greek legend. "They flew too close to the S un, the wax melted on t heir wings and they c rashed. Some people c oncluded that flight was mpossible. Others went b ack to the drawing board a nd developed jet lag."
