Coordinated by the Jewish Family and Chil- dren's Services (JFCS), par- ticipants in the Jewish Emergency Assistance Network (JEAN) include the federation, the Jewish Community Relations Council, the Board of Rab- bis of Northern California, the United Jewish Commu- nity Centers, Jewish Home for the Aged, Mount Zion Hospital, Jewish Voca- tional Service, Hillel units, Menorah Park and the Bureau of Jewish Educa- tion, according to William Lowenberg, federation president. Lowenberg said the agen- cies "have been responding to the needs of the Jewish community as they have arisen during the reces- sion." The Cultural Commission of CONGREGATION SHAAREY ZEDEK invites the entire community to hear Rabbi Harold S. Kushner Thursday, April 21, 1983 8 p.m. Percy Urges Recognition of Israeli MDA RABBI KUSHNER in a review of his book WHEN BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO GOOD PEOPLE Repeatedly on best-seller lists and a Book-of-the-Month Club selection, written when depression and grief over the loss of his own 14-year-old son Aaron, "threw Rabbi Kushner into a shock of theological doubt," according to Time Magazine. Since publishing the book, the rabbi has been in demand to lecture on its texts "and has become rabbi to a nationwide congregation . . ." Sponsored by the Berry Family Morris Adler Hall Congregation Shaarey Zedek No admission charge WASHINGTON — Sena- tor Charles H. Percy (R-Ill.) asked the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) last month to con- sider acting soon on an Is- raeli government sugges- tion which could afford recognition — and greater legal protection — to Is- rael's Magen David Adorn (MDA) emergency medical service. Percy, who co-sponsored a resolution passed by the Se- nate last September which called for recognition of the MDA by the ICRC and the League of Red Cross Societies, urged the ICRC to consider an interim pro- posal to break the 34-year deadlock which has prohib- ited recognition of MDA. The MDA has been de- nied status in the League because its medical teams carry the Red Star of David. Only the Red Cross and Red Crescent emblems are offi- cially recognized by the ICRC and the League pur- suant to the Geneva Con- ventions of 1949. MOIES CHETIM ORGANIZATION OF DETROIT, INC.
