THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Israel Picks Tall Veteran as Chief of Staff By MOSHE RON The Jewish News Special Israel Correspondent TEL AVIV — The new Is- raeli Chief of Staff Moshe Levy, who is called "Moshe-and-a-half" (be- cause of his height of 6 feet 6 inches), will assume his new office soon. Once during a military parade little David Ben-Gurion tried to look at Levy's rank. Ben- Gurion had to rise on his toes. Fifty years ago, Moshe's father Gershon came from Iraq for a visit to Eretz Yis- rael. Returning to Iraq, he decided to close his little shop and to go with his wife Naomi and his son Baruch to Israel. The journey took months and they walked part of the way. In Tel Aviv, Gershon sold vegetables in the Carmel Market. In the meantime, three boys were born and the family lived in one little room. Afterwards, Gershon opened a clothes shop and moved to a two-room apartment in the Shapira Quarter. The parents took care that their chil- dren did not suffer from hunger. The children finished primary school and started to work in order to help the family. They learned in evening classes. Moshe was an errand boy in an insurance company and later at Bank Hapoalim. The sons never neglected their studies. The oldest, Baruch, studied sociology at Tel Aviv Uni- versity and earned his PhD. He was commander of the Gadna (paramilitary youth) and became adviser to the Prime Minister on social problems. The second son, Yehuda, and the youngest, Shlomo, became engineers. All served in the army during all the wars and rose to high rank. Moshe has served in the army for 30 years. He was wounded in the Jordan Val- ley when Arab terrorists at- tacked his unit. He fought after the Six-Day War against infiltrators. When the wounded Moshe was brought into Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem, the wounded Arab terrorist who had shot at Moshe was in the same ward. Moshe had to remain in a cast for weeks. The doctors and nurses treated Moshe and wounded terrorist at the same time. The terrorist did not believe his eyes. "I could never im- agine that I would be treated in a fibspital in the same way like the general whom I had shot and wounded. I shall never forget this treatment," he said. General Levy finished his studies at the University of Jerusalem in economics, history and Islamic studies. He is married and has five children. Some of them are already serving in the army. He lives in Kibutz Bet Alfa. In recent years he served as vice chief of staff in the Israeli army. Moshe has refused in the past to grant inter- views. He has also asked his family to refrain from giving interviews until he assumes his new office. The Israeli press and pub- lic welcomed the appoint- ment. At the same time Moshe Arens succeeded Ariel Sharon as Defense Minister. The Israeli press believes these appoint- ments will change the Is- raeli Defense Ministry. The press criticized the last speech of Chief of Staff Rafael Eytan, in which he announced that Israel must keep Judea and Samaria in order to be able to defend itself. CARICATURES 535-5340 STEAM IT OUT TiAntii Pouse I Egalitarian Goals of Zionism By BERNICE TANNENBAUM (Editor's note: Mrs. Tannenbaum is im- mediate past president of Hadassah and acting chairman of the World Zionist Organization - American Section.) The report of the Com- mission of Inquiry and the acceptance of its recom- mendations were a stun- ning example of democracy in action at its finest. It ex- pressed those qualities of moral decency, a willing- ness to examine and flagel- late itself and a supreme devotion to democratic principles, all of which should reveal to America the worthiness of its only democratic ally in the Mid- dle East. The people of Israel do not need double-standard cri- tics to prod their conscience. Israel has proven that it is steadfast in its loyalty to its Zionist heritage of adher- ence to morality, justice and the sanctity of human life. Zionism has been that rarity among national lib- eration movements, a cause dedicated to the pursuit of universal social justice that is as essential to its aim as its national goal. Surrounded by enemies sworn to her ex- tinction, the people and state of Israel staunchly adhere to Zionism's egalitarian vision of the rights of man. Despite four wars for sur- vival, Israel is a land of democracy in a vast Arab expanse of autocracy. Its Arab citizens enjoy equal rights, Knesset representa- BERNICE TANNENBAUM tion and the benefits of up- ward social and economic mobility. This is the truth which representatives of despotic tyrannies decry falsely in their United Na- tions votes with voices choked with oil. Daniel Patrick Moyni- han's characterization still holds: "The enemies of Zionism are the enemies of democracy!" Today we witness the sad abasement of the United Nations grotesquely warped into a caricature of the Parliament of Man where truth is stood on its head and the high hopes of humanity are betrayed by the virulent anti-Zionist and anti-Israel campaign that pervades the entire UN system. A Zionist knows that he is "one" with his people. He personally affirms his Jewish identity. He keenly comprehends his need of Israel for his own moral and psychological wholeness and whole- someness. He knows that Israel requires his sup- port and strength for its self-enhancement, secu- rity, survival .and the achievement of its his- toric destiny. In the words of Herzl in "Altneuland," spoken through the president of the Jewish Academy: "We are in duty bound to increase beauty and wisdom upon the earth (of Israel) unto our last breath. For the earth is ourselves. Out of her we come, unto her we return. "Ecclesiastes said it, and we today have nothing to add to his words: 'But the earth shall endure forever.' " Islamic Tower ) (Editor's note: The fol- lowing article appeared in the April 6 issue of The Nation, under the title "Nuclear Jihad?") Speaking recently before some 100 resident religious scholars at Tantur, Jerusalem's Ecumenical Research Institute, Sheik Muhammad al- Husseini, a noted oted Muslim religious leader, argued that there is explicit reli- gious sanction for the use of nuclear weapons by an Is- lamic state. Quoting extensively from the Koran, Sheik al- Husseini said that its eighth surah (book) pro- vides scriptural justifica- tion for the development of an Islamic bomb. The actual use of nuclear weapons he sought to justify by citing several Koranic verses, e.g.: "Warfare is or- dained for you, though it is hateful unto you" (Surah 2, Al-Baqarah 216).
