LISTENING
POST

THANKSGIVING of
1982 was full of scenes on
TV . . . cheese lines, soup
kitchens, free food . . . so
many hungry people . . . It
was then that Lou and Lor-
raine Popper decided to do
something . . . small as it
may be . . . They contacted
Joyce Keller, director of the
Jewish Association for Re-
tarded Citizens . . . told of
wanting to make up two
Thanksgiving baskets for
needy families . . . and her
case workers agreed to de-
liver them where needed
most.
Lou and Lorraine realized
this wasn't hardly enough
and began an ongoing pro-
gram . . . by approaching
their bowling league, "The
Mixers," a group of 24
couples, to help with food
donations . . . Also con-
tacted was friend Dave
Horowitz, who got many
Fort Street Produce Termi-
nal merchants -into the pic-
ture with much generosity.
When the time came to
assemble the baskets at
their Empire Packing plant,
Dave called to apologize .. .
he couldn't fiteverything in
his car . . . could a truck be
sent to pick it up . . . So for
Xmas and Hanuka many
more families were taken
care of . . and this week
baskets were sent out for
Passover.
Even Eddie Brodzik do-
nated money to buy a bike
for Debby, five-year-old
daughter of a retarded
mother . . . The employees
at Empire Packing,
suppliers, competitors and
friends who help are too
numerous to mention . . . all
deserve to be . . . for sure.
But the story isn't over,
it's just beginning . . . with
Lorraine and Lou hoping to
continue helping wherever
and whenever they can .. .
If anyone would like to par-
ticipate . . . call Lou at 345-
6565.
CONGRATS . . . to Fran
and Sol Adler . . . on their
39th anniversary . . . the
former Detroiters now live
in Northridge, Calif.
GOOD NEWS . . . that a
sisterhood auxiliary will be
formed by the Knights of
Pythias, Detroit Lodge 55
. . . It could be one of the
catalyst moves that would
put the K of P back on the
right track again as per yes-
teryears . . . Many re-
member how strong this
organization was when
there was both men's and
women's groups . . . The
Pythians and Pythian Sis-
terhood of Detroit 55 was a
strong combination . . . in
cohesive togetherness .. .
April 17, 7 p.m. at Kingsley
Inn is the annual dinner-
dance by Knights of Pythias
55.
CONGRATS . . . to An-
tonia Drucker . . . on her
90th birthday . . She's the
mother of Executive Cus-
tom Shirtmakers'. Ernest

3/4
Drucker . . . He and wife
Marietta went to New York
to celebrate the wonderful
simha and Passover to-
gether with her.
BACK ON Apia", 14,
1964 we made mention of
Brian Kerwin being the
biggest baby born that week
(nine pounds, 9. ounces) .. .
the son of Helen and George
Kerwin makes it big again
. . . reaching the Dean's List
in his first semester at Uni-
versity of Michigan.

riet Rotter, CPA Gloria
Buccerio and Joan Green-
field, psychologist . . . at
Northfield Hilton.
LES GREENSPAN was
•among the laughers galore
as Shriners partied in
Rialto Restaurant's back
room . . . Woodward and
Nine Mile . . . when three
birthday celebrants among
the 30 attendees were given
a pie . . . in the face . . . Big,
beautiful cake came after
they cleaned off the shaving
cream . . . and went back to
the circus.
HOWARD NUDELL is
one lucky guy . . . and the
perspiration he came home
with to wife Linda was still
dripping . . . Coming back
from a client meeting in
Cleveland, Howard was
going 50 miles an hour in a
fog . . . Suddenly he hit
something with a big smash ,
. . . The car went another
100 feet and he stopped,
looked at the bashed-in
front end and knew he hit
something . . . Hair, etc.,
and Howard went to the
Ohio Highway Patrol .. .
who held him until what-
ever he hit was found . . . It
turned out to be a deer .. .
which Howard had origi-
nally surmised. •
