THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, April 1, 1983 41 Kibutz Movement School Trains Teachers in Unique Way By BEN FRANK (Copyright 1983, JTA, Inc.) This college is really different. . The man who is dean one day can be the students' > waiter or their chauffeur the next. This school originally did not like to give degrees or diplomas. This school has more democracy, no ranking > and small classes. It is Oranim, the School of Education of the Kibutz Movement and is located near the town of Tivon, just outside of Haifa. And the dean, Moshe Giladi, like every kibutznik, talks pro- udly about the 3,000 stu- dents attending Oranim, BILL MEYER MUSIC 355-2721 PEOPLE'S CHOICE 459-7287 INNO- VATIONS 589-2478 60-65 percent of whom are from kibutzim. "These students are older, they've been to the army and completed an addi- tional year of service to the kibutz movement. They have not time to waste and their expectations are high," he said in an inter- view covering the programs at Oranim. "The students who come to the school are the future of the kibutz movement and, in many ways, of the state of Israel." The influence of the kibutz movement is felt far beyond its borders because of its uniqueness, its cooperative and democratic way of life, and its singular educational system. Yet, kibutzniks consti- tute only 3.6 percent of the Israeli population and there are only 230 kibutzim in the entire state. Just as the respect and admiration of the kibutzim far outweigh their numbers, so does this school of educa- tion. Some 25 percent of all elementary school teachers in Israel have been trained at Oranim, which sees its role as an alternative to the general system of education in Israel. educates Oranim teachers- who work with in- fants, and teachers for all ages up to post graduate high school pupils. The first hearing was last year, just before Passover. Noach Dear, the Brook- lyn Councilman who repre- sents the Flatbush and Boro Park districts, which are among the most heavily populated Jewish sections of Brooklyn, served as chairman for the hearing. He said that he had in- vited the major pro- ducers of Passover prod- ucts to participate in the hearing "and not one of them showed up." Dear said the consumer affairs department was conducting a comparison shopping study on Passover prices and planned to pub- lish a list of its findings. He said the consumer af- fairs committee would con- duct a hearing, probably next month, on year-round kosher product prices. Dear said there was evidence that consumers were complaining to merchants about "exor- bitant" price increases Mile & Southfield Open 7 Days Mon. thru Sat. 9-7 Sunday 10-5 . , chairman, Sidney D.
