Jewish Youth Hed from Nazis
by Serving in the German Army

TEL AVIV — A Jewish
youngster named Shlomo
Perl served in the German
army during World War II.
. Shlomo was a blond
youngster who spoke fluent
German. He was born and
raised in Germany but was
living in Poland when the
war started.
When the Germans in-
vaded Poland, Shlomo and
his brothers were exiled to
Bialistok and afterwards to
Grodno. He was 14 years
old. He attended a Jewish
school in Grodno.
On June 24, 1941, when
the Germans invaded
Russia, Shlomo tried to
flee again but was seized
by the Nazis. Shlomo was
saved because he did not
look Jewish and spoke
fluent German. He told
the Germans that he was
a child of German par-
ents who had died young,
and he had been edu-
cated in an orphanage in
Grodno. As he also spoke
Russian, the Wehrmacht
enlisted him as an in-
terpreter.
Shlomo was sent to a
prison camp for Russian
soldiers. The prisoners were
hungry, their spirit broken,
and they were lying half-
dead on the floor. One of
them told Shlomo, "I am
Jacob Dzugoshvili Stalin,
the son of Joseph Stalin."
When Shlomo, who used
the name Josef Freil, inter-
preted to the German com-
mander the declaration of
the prisoner, Stalin's son
was immediately taken
away. Shlomo did not see
him again.
Shlomo moved from front
to front. Several times he
was in danger of being rec-
ognized as a Jew. He re-
members the day when the
doctor of a camp tried to
seduce him. Once, when he
took a shower, the doctor
saw that Shlomo was cir-
cumcized. Shlomo though
that his end had arrived.
But the doctor was not
a dedicated Nazi. He
calmed Shlomo and told
him, "Do not be afraid.
There still is a different
Germany.". Afterwards
the doctor abstained

Shlomo would have prob-
ably remained with the
German army if the Ger-
mans were not so meticul-
ous. It turned out that
Shlomo had been too young
to enlist. His commander,
who wished to adopt him as
his son, decided to transfer
him to a school-of the Hitler
Youth in Braunschweig.
It was a model school for
young fascists from all over
the world who received a
special education as leaders
of tomorrow. Shlomo got a
recommendation letter and
was accepted.
He had to be very careful
because he had to take off
his clothes for exercises. He
associated with his col-
leagues from the Hitler
Youth, enjoyed a social life
and even went out with girls
of the German Girls' Union.
One of these girls, Leni
Lenz, fell in love with him
and brought him to the
house of her parents.
They treated him like
their own son.
Once Leni's mother asked
him whether was a German.
Shlomo could not resist and
answered, "No, I-am a Jew."
...The woman kissed him- and
told him not to be afraid.
She warned him not to tell
the truth to her daughter,
because she heartily be-
lieved in the Nazis.
Shlomo was required to
pass a medical examination
every year. He invented a
new story each year to avoid
it. Once he asked a week be-
fore the examination to be
allowed to visit the city of
Lodz because he had rela-
tives there. The truth was
that he wanted to visit the
ghetto and look for his par-
ents. He could not find
-- --N
them.
Shlomo succeeded in sur-
viving the horrible years of
the war. He was saved by
the U.S. army at a camp of
Hitler Youth. He addressed
an American Jewish soldier
in Yiddish, telling him that
he was not a German but
Jew named Shlomo Perl.
Shlomo today lives in Is-
rael. He is an ordinary citi-
zen with a family, but is un-
able to free himself from the
memories of the years when
he had to deny his identity
in order to escape death.

Harmful Media?
TEL AVIV (JNI) — In a
recent poll, some 65 percent
of Israeli adults said they
believed the nation's mass
news media to be
detrimental to the national

Last year, in a similar
poll, 51 percent expressed
that opinion.
