Rabbi Lieberman Dies

NEW YORK — Rabbi
Saul Lieberman, head of the
rabbinical school of the
Jewish Theological Semi-
nary of America, died
March 23 at age 85.
In 1971, Rabbi Lieber
man, the seminary's
tinguished Research Pro-
fessor of Talmud, became
the only non-Israeli to ever
receive the Israel Prize for
his writing, the New York
Times reported.
He received the annual
$35,000 Harvey Prize of the
Technion in 1976 for his re-
search on Palestine in the
Greek and Roman eras and

Rebecca Safer

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Rebecca Herzmark Safer,
an active Zionist and co-
founder of the Washington
chapter of Hadassah 64
years ago, died March 19 at
age 85.
Mrs. Safer was born in
Arkansas and moved to the
Washington ares at an early
age. She was educated at
George Washington Uni-
versity. She attended an
early World Zionist Con-
gress in Switzerland and vi-
sited Palestine before re-
turning to Washington
where he home became a
meeting place for visiting
Zionist leaders.
She served as president of
the Washington chapter of
Hadassah from 1926 to
1929; was a founder of the
National Sponsors for Israel
Bonds; and a founding
member of the Trustee Pro-
gram and the Prime Minis-
ters Club. In 1965, she
chaired the Israel Indepen-
dence Ball Committee.
A year later she became
the first annual recipient of
the Abraham S. Kay Lead-
ership for Israel Award for
community service. In 1978,
she received the Ben-
Gurion Award of the State
of Israel Bond Organiza-
tion.

Another project he was
working on at the time of
his death was an edition
of the Tosefta of which he
had published 12 vol-
umes.
A native of Russia, Rabbi
Lieberman was ordained at
the Slobodka Yeshiva in
1916 and received a Master
of Arts degree from Hebrew
University in 1931. He was
president of the American
Academy for Jewish Re-
search and from 1935 to
1940 was dean of the Harry
Fischel Institute in
Jerusalem.

Joseph Shifman

Joseph Shifman, former
owner of Shifman's Clo-
thing in Highland Park,
died March 22 at age 77.
Born in Russia, Mr. Shif-
man was in the clothing
business for 50 years. He
was a member of Cong. Bnai
David and its former trea-
surer and a board member.
He also held membership in
Pisgah Lodge of Bnai Brith,
Mosaic Lodge of the Masons
and the Zionist Organiza-
tion of America.
He leaves his wife, Jean;
two sons, Burton and Ar-
nold; a daughter, Mrs. De-
nnis (Marilyn) Aaron; two
brothers, Mendel and Si-
mon; a sister in Russia and
10 grandchildren.

Andy Lebove

Andy Lebove, a driver for
the former Sam's Depart-
ment Store in Detroit, died
March 20 at age 86.
Born in Russia, Mr.
Lebove was a member of
Downtown-Fox Lodge of
Bnai Brith. He resided in
Oak Park.
Mr. Lebove is survived by
his wife, Betty; a daughter,
Mrs. Charles M. (Florine)
Posen; a sister, Mrs. Rose
Rubenstein of Owosso; and
three grandchildren.

ALBERT APTEKAR,
87, died March 17. He
leaves two sons, Milton and
Dr. Gerald; a daughter,
Mrs. Joseph (Beatrice) De-
nhoffer; a sister, Mrs. Al-
bert (Bluma) Fietz of
Phoenix, Ariz.; seven
grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren.

still the Shamouti orange,
praised for its taste and ap-
pearance, a triumph of
grafting onto the indig-
enous bitter orange trees of
the Middle East.
A total of 341,000 tons
of Shamouti were ex-
ported last year as part of
the 1.8 million tons of cit-
rus exports, which repre-
sent $230 million in
foreign earnings.
Israel also exports fresh
dates, mangoes, celery,
radishes, lettuce, strawber-
ries, tomatoes, avocadoes,
Chinese cabbage, Israeli
melon, Sharon fruit, pepper,
eggplants, squash, pomeg-
ranates, peanuts, almonds
and pecans.
