column in 1968, "put them
all together and they might
just have fit into Darby's!

beyond all recognition .
By Tuesday morning
crowds of people were driv-
ing by in disbelief . . . Many
got out to look in shock at
what had happened . . . cus-
tomers and employees both
. . . They had seen it on TV,
heard it on the radio, were
told about it by others .. .
but they still couldn't be-
lieve it.
"The wonderful Dar-
by's was no more ...
Sam's stepson, Bernie
Kerner, looking like he
had been up all night,
was seemingly calm but
understandably ruffled
as he tried to answer
questions as best he
could ... Tommy Chad-
wick, bartender in Dar-
by's • Skylight Room
Lounge, shook his head
and muttered, 'I just
don't believe it!'
One of the girls who
worked nights as a waitress
stood by her car and openly
cried.
"Darby's had become
more than just a restaurant
in Detroit . . . it had earned
a distinct reputation that
only a beloved institution of
its type enjoys . . . Yes, this
fire will long be remem-
bered, but in the hearts of
all the many people who
know Sam Boesky and Be-
rnie Kerner, the feeling is
for sure that Darby's will
rise again!"
Ever so close . . . unbek-
nown to so many who kept
asking, "When will we have
another Darby's?" . . . it al-
most did happen.
The many human stories
about Sam Boesky are cer-
tain to come out . . . there
was much about this man.
The legend that was Sam
Boesky may be gone . . . but
he leaves behind a lot of pre-
cious memories . . . and
that, my friends, is the true
meaning of life.
SPIFFY'S will run two
operations . . . The present
one on Greenfield south of
10 Mile . . . plus their soon
take-over of the former
Green-10 and Dubbs site in
New Orleans Mall, 10 Mile
and Greenfield.
