The book delves into the lavish _ceremonies, oracles and demon exorcisms that dominate popular Taoism; studies Mystical Taoism, which is seen as the forerunner of Zen Budhism; and looks at the philosophi- cal aspects of the ancient religion. Blofeld was born in England and is a well known authority and writer on Eastern religion and cul- ture. He has traveled exten- sively throughout Asia and currently works for the United Nations in Thai- land. ROME — "The Jewish community of Rome will gather together this Passover, united more strongly than ever, after what happened to us last Oct. 9," declared Rabbi Al- berto Piattelli, head of Rome's large Jewish school. It was on Oct. 9, 1982, that terrorists threw bombs and shot at the congregants emerging that Sabbath from the Grand Synagogue, inflicting death and leaving many wounded. Today, five months after this infamous attack, the magnificent Grand Syna- gogue continues to be Rome's main place of Jewish worship, but also re- sembles an armed fortress, as civic authorities attempt to make sure that there can be no repetition. "The 15,000 Jews of Rome will sit down at the Seder table with a deeper consciousness of what it means to be a Jew living in an often hostile world," predicted the rabbi. He observed that Passover has generally been an uncomfortable sea- son for Roman Jews, be- cause Easter is the time when many of Italy's priests continue to preach sermons referring to the Jews as the killers of Christ. But "for we Jews, Passover is a time to be together, and to take counsel on matters that concern our entire commu- nity," he concluded. The Grand Synagogue is now being restored with some small financial sup- port by the government. The signs of the bomb at- tack are all over the syna- gogue, but the 40 wounded still attend services. Ever since that day, there are evidences of increased support for Roman Jewry on the part of government leaders, the labor confeder- ations and the media. How- ever, Jews have no political influence in the country be- cause of the paucity of num- bers, only 30,000 through- out the nation. The community is begin- ning to engage the govern- ment in discussions that may lead to a new relation- ship and increased rights and privileges, but a com- plicating factor is the Catholic Church. There ap- pears to be much more cor- diality between the church and the Jewish community than has existed in 300 or 400 years. Shortly after his eleva- tion, Pope John Paul in- vited Chief Rabbi Elio Toaff and other Jewish representatives to meet with him in an atmos- phere of equality and mutual consideration. According to Rabbi Piatelli, there has not been any follow-up of these initial talks. The Jews of Rome have not been exempt from the current economic slump throughout the country and it is a constant struggle for the community to support its school of 1,500 students and 200 teachers, which takes care of the educa- tional requirements for children age 3-18. The Jewish visitor to Rome and to its community of Jews leaves heartened and fortified by the specta- cle of a people who were active in the Rome of 2,000 years ago, who have con- tributed much to the saga of this great city throughout the centuries, who have endured in recent times the savage thrusts of Palesti- nian terrorists, and who will sit down together on the spproaching Seder nights, the stoic, yet joyous re- tellers of the exodus from another land. Humankind now faces the final plague which is total annihilation through a nuclear holocaust. It is now possible that our planet and all forms of life on it will be completely devastated. But, Isaiah taught us that God, Who formed the earth, created it for habitation and not for waste. We Jews have a particular responsibility to warn the world that the new combination of technology and brutal- ity can transform our environment into a crematorium. We must join all the peoples of the Earth in a demand against the proliferation of nuclear arms and the poisoning of our atmosphere and soil. Every gun made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, from those who are cold and not clothed. Let us fix our gaze steadily upon the dream of an end to the threat of a final solution to the entire human race. For God's sake, for our sake, for the sake of our children, and our children's children let us literally "beat our swords into plowshares."
