The search for "hametz" is conducted at night be- cause the family is usually home at night and, thus, can either observe or partici- pate in the sea:ch. Also, before the advent of the electricity, using a can- dle for the search at night illuminated cracks and cre- vices which might not otherwise be evident in the daytime. Trifa, of Grass Lake, Mich., voluntarily agreed to deportation last October during court proceedings. The U.S. had accused him of concealing his ties to the fascist Romanian Iron Guard during World War II when Trifa entered the U.S. in the 1950s and applied for U.S. citizenship. Last Friday, eight mem- bers of Trifa's Romanian Orthodox Church filed suit in Federal Distric Court in Detroit, claiming that the government's treatment of Trifa violates the First Amendment guarantees of freedom of religion. Neal Sher, acting direc- tor of the U.S. Justice De- partment's Office of Spe- cial Investigations, told The Jewish News this week that he could not comment on the suit. The official statement, is- sued at the EEC summit conference here, also urged the Arab states to take "full advantage" of the current opportunity to try to reach a peace settlement in the Middle East. The joint communique reasserted the right of all states in the region to live in peace be- hind secure borders. At the same time, it reaf- firmed its "past statements" which include the Venice declaration of June, 1980, and specifically called for the implementation of the rights of the Palestinian people "with all that this implies." The Venice dec- laration had called, among other things, for PLO "asso- ciation" in any Middle East peace process. The 10 leaders included Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher of Britain, President Francois Mit- terrand of France and Chancellor Helmut Kohl of West Germany. They agreed among them- selves "not to do any- thing which could im- pede America's own ef- forts" in that direction, the sources said. Have you 50 friends? — it is not enough. Have you one enemy? — it is too much. —Italian Proverb Sher said the Justice De- partment is making "dili- gent efforts" to find a coun- try that will accept Trifa. He said West Germany has turned down a U.S. request to accept Trifa. Previously, Switzerland and Italy had refused requests to allow Trifa to become a perma- nent resident. Trifa has been accused of instigating a pogrom in Bucharest in January 1941 which led to the deaths of hundreds of Jews. Britain's Foreign Secre- tary Francis Pym used the visit to assert that the Arabs had "got their act to- gether" and adopted a negotiating position for peace. At the same time, he said, Israel's refusal to get out of Lebanon and its con- tinuing settlement building on the West Bank were de- laying progress to peace.
