WASHINGTON (JTA) —
The U.S. Senate has
adopted a resolution declar-
ing the week of April 10-6 as
a Week of Remembrance fOr
the 40th anniversary of the
Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.
The House is expected to
adopt a similar resolution
which also calls on the
President to designate that
week as a week of remem-
brance.
The resolution, intro-
duced by Senators Charles
Percy (R-Ill.) and Claiborne
Pell (D-R.I.) and co-
sponsored by 45 other Sena-
tors, notes that the uprising

voted into law before parli-

The travel tax, originally
instituted by a labor-led
government, was rescinded
by the Likud regime when it
first took office in 1977. It is

the world for all time that
the forces of freedom and
liberty cannot long be sup-
pressed by the forces of

"their valor and their faith
gave urgency to the creation
of the free state of Israel."
The resolution also took
note that the American
Gathering of Jewish
Holocaust Survivors is
being held in Washington
starting April 10 "and will
organize programs to rein-
force the need for the con-
tinuous struggle against
Anti-Semitism."

being restored now under
heavy pressure from the
Tami and Agudat Israel
parties, two of Likud's coali-
tion partners.
The new tax is expected to
yield more than three bil-
lion shekels ($750 million) a
year, according to Israeli
economists. Tami expects
part of this revenue to be
used to increased welfare
subsidies for large families.
The Aguda Israel wants
larger government sub-
sidies for its yeshiva stu-
dents to come out of the new
tax, as promised by Likud.
The travel tax is an un-
popular measure, consider-
ing the large numbers of Is-
raelis who vacation abroad
each year. It is opposed by
the Labor Alignment. Labor
Party Chairman Shimon
Peres conceded that it was a
mistake to impose the tax
when Labor was in power.
Government spokesmen
note that the 15 percent
value-added tax (VAT) is
not applied to travel tickets.
Opposition MKs reply that
the $50 levy on a $300 ticket
to a nearby Mediterranean
resort amounts to more
than 15 percent.
Although the measure
was passed on first reading
by a 44-34 vote, some obser-
vers feel that the travel tax
may run into difficulties in
the final tally.

Israel-India Pact?

LONDON (ZINS) — The

case Israel decides to de-
stroy Pakistan's nuclear
capability.

Because an estimated
250 Detroiters have regis-
tered to attend the
American Gathering,
Joseph H. Jackier,
president of the United
Jewish Charities, an-
nounced that UJC has
made a grant to the
Gathering.

The National Organiza-
tion of Jewish Holocaust
Survivors also announced
that it will hold a unity
dinner April 10, the first
night of the Gathering, at
the Washington Sheraton
Hotel. The organization is
trying to unite all of the
survivors into one group.

Senator Rudy Boschwitz
(R-Minn.), and Reps. Sam
Gejdenson (D-Conn.) and
Tom Lantos (D-Calif.) are
serving as honorary chair-
men of the dinner.
