THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Lubavitch Makes Available Document for Hametz Sale Homeowners may dele- gate the power of attorney to Rabbi Betzalel Gottlieb to perform the mitzva of sell- ing the hametz according to a legal contract drawn up for Rabbi Gottlieb of the Lubavitcher Center. The document, which ap- pears elsewhere in this is- sue, conforms with the pre- cept that a Jew must sell all bread and leavened prod- ucts that remain in his home or on his property for Passover. The homeowner locks away the hametz that he wishes to sell in a specified place in his house; then the rabbi acts as in- termediary to transact a sale of these hametz prod- ucts to a non-Jew. For the duration of the Passover festival this sale is absolutely legal and bind- ing according to Torah law as well as according to state law; the hametz simply does not belong • to the homeowner, although it is in his house. (After Passover the transaction is reversed and the hametz again becomes the property of the homeowner.) Rabbi Gottlieb stressed there is no cost for this service, but forms mailed in must be mailed early in order to reach the Lubavitch office no later than Thursday, March Responsibility cannot be accepted for forms returned later. Send or bring form to: Cong. Mishkan Israel Nusach H'Ari, LUbavitch Center, 14000 W. Nine Mile, Oak Park 48237. Rabbi Gottlieb encouraged -using shmura. matza on Passover.- The word shmura which means "watched" in Hebrew, is used to describe those mat- zot because the wheat used in their baking is carefully watched and protected against any contact with water from the moment of harvest on. Water would cause leavening and thus dis- qualify its use on Passover. One should try to have these matzot for the Seder, Rabbi Gottlieb said. The Lubavitcher Center is-offering one free shmura matza to all who are in- terested. These shmura matza which are round in form, are baked entirely by hand under scrutinizing supervision, to avoid any possibility of leavening dur- ing the baking process. To obtain a free matza, come to the Lubavitcher Center. For more informa- tion, call the Lubavitch Center, 543-6611.
