Detroit to Be a Model for Christian Reconciliation With Jewry

nity. What brought him to
the cross were ideals and
values expressed by many
Jews of his time."
Pr. Pawlikowski added
that gains in interfaith
understanding "will not be
as spectacular from here on
in as they have been since
Vatican II. We will have to
continue plodding forward,

making a consistent effort."
Referring to an inci-
dent that happened to
him in recent years, Fr.
Pawlikowski said, "We
will have to get to the
point where Orthodox
Jewish boys will not have
to call a priest aside to
ask if 'Christ Killer' is still
the teaching of the
Church."

Sr. Anna Marie Erst of
the National Institute for
Catholic-Jewish Education
told the press conference
that her organization has
been "zeroing-in on the
(Catholic) schools."
"Adult minds tend to be
closed," she said, "but chil-
dren are very open and very
surprised when they see our

Jews: A Troubled Brother-
hood.' The reaction of the
teachers has been, 'Show
this to the other teachers.' "
Sr. Anna Marie said her
organization is planning to
expand its programs in the
schools and wants to change
Catholic textbooks. In the
textbooks, "there is a failure
of ommission," she said.
"There are many oppor-
tunities to get across the
ideals and customs of the
Jewish faith that are not
used."
Rev. James R. Lyons, a
Methodist minister and
director of the Ecumeni-
cal Institute for Jewish-
Christian Studies in
Southfield, said his
organization is planning
an ecumenical study tour
of Israel; a tour of Ober-
ramergau — site of a
famous "Passion Play" —
and nearby Nazi exter-
mination camps which
Lyons called an out-
growth of the passion
plays; and the institute
will publish a "notebook
of concerns" in Sep-
tember.
He introduced Sr. Carol
Rittner of Mercy College, an
expert on the Holocaust,
who has joined the institute
as a staff associate.
Fr. Alex Brunet, director
of the -division of Ecumeni-
cal and Interreligious Af-
fairs for the Archdiocese of
Detroit, acknowledged Rev.
Lyons' efforts and said they
meant that "this is no
longer just a • Catholic-
• Jewish effort" in Detroit.
Rabbi Tanenbaum also
the evening program itself
had great symbolic impor-
tance. "The coming together
of Christian and Jewish
leaders has not been a com-
monplace occurrence dur-
ing the past 1,900 years. We
are building a community of
caring people.
"This is important
when we see what Pope
John Paul II is confront-
ing in Latin America,
where prejudice and con-
tempt are a way of life." -
He said new efforts
toward Christian under-
standing "is the closing of a
cycle. We have to learn from
-the past to build a genuine
mutual regard:"
Tabbi Tanenbaum also
paid tribute to Frank

In his address Tuesday
evening, Fr. Pawlikowski
told the audience, "Our re-
sponsibility is clear. Chris-
tian proclamation during
Holy Week,. both liturgical
and homiletical, needs to
free itself from the historic
tendency to interpret the
death/resurrection of Christ
as the • antithesis of
Judaism. Put another way,
Christians must be taught
the continuing validity of
the Jewish covenant which
remains intact after- the
Christ Event.
"Fulfilling this man-
date given by the Church
will not prove easy. The
belief within Christianity
that Christ represents the
abrogation of Judaism is
deep and persistent. De-
spite the Vatican Coun-
cil's repudiation of the
deicide charge and simi-
lar repudiations by major
Protestant_ groups many

churchpeople are still
heavily tainted in their
outlook on the Jewish
Pe'ople by this fable.
Popular culture with its
`Jesus Christ Superstar'
and `Godspell,' with its
myriad passion plays,
tends to reinforce the
stereotypes of Jewish
collective responsibility
