Confederates were
hopelessly surrounded) to
Shiloh where a pitched
battle was fought — the
Union casualties exceeded
those of the Confederacy.
The mass slaughter at
Shiloh which prompted
calls for Grant's removal re-
lated to the Union's losses
and not to the Confederate
soldiers who died there.
Moreover no one has ever
described the events at
Shiloh as a "massacre."
