and Yiddish folklore cen-
tered around one of God's
most stubbcirn and inde-
pendent; yet lovable crea-
tures, the cat.
In her introduction,
Roberta Kalechofsky dedi-
cates the volume to Sherira
Gaon, the 10th Century
rabbi credited with writing
the first defense of the
rights of animals. The
author relates the cat's role
in this episode:
"In the 10th Century,
when Sherira laid down
his rules, it was still the
custom for Jews of any
station in life, on any
question whatsoever,
however trivial or pro-
found, or even immodest
to modern senses, to seek
the authority of a rabbi,
be he famous or not."
"An anonymous inter-
rogator (questioned) the
great Gaon of Pumbedita
concerning the sufferings of
a certain rabbi. His suffer-
ing was -initiated when a
calf, about to be slaughtered
for fziod, had sought refuge
with him.
"But instead of rescuing
the calf, the rabbi delivered
him to the slaughterer with-
these words: 'Go, there, thou
art created for this.'
"God punished him for
this harshness with years of
torment which was relieved
only when he came to the
rescue of some newborn kit-
tens which his housemaid
was about to sweep out with
the kitchen dirt. On this oc-
casion, the rabbi cried out to
her: 'Don't do them any
harm. The Lord is good to all
and His tender mercies are
over all His works.' Im-
mediately, his suffering
ceased."
The 62-page volume
also includes a glossary
of Biblical, Hebraic, Yid-
dish and Israeli names an
owner may wish to be-
stow upon his cherished
pet.
Meir Rosenberg is the
author of "Quotations for a
New Age." Sara Feldman is
a regular participant in
shows at the Carnegie
Museum in Pittsburgh and
has staged a number of
one-woman shows of her
work in oil and acrylic.

EILAT (JNI) — The an-
nual Israel Fashion Week
took place recently in Eilat
and the choice proved jus-
tified. While the north of the
country was freezing, the
170 buyers from Europe —
and for the first time also
from Lebanon — could enjoy
not only the latest Israeli
designs but also the winter
sun.
Forty-six firms presented
their summer collection.
The Israel textile exports
face a difficult period be-
cause of the world recession.
Exports have dropped from
$395 million in 1981 to $354
million in 1982.
