A focal point of this effort occurred Tuesday evening at Southfield's North Congregational Church, as 400 Chris- tians heard Rabbi Marc H. Tananbaum of the American Jewish Committee and Fr. John T. Pawlikowski of the Limr__ Catholic Theological Union in Chicago discuss "Good Fri- day Worship — Jewish Concerns and a Christian Re- sponse." The program was sponsored by two fledgling interfaith groups who are striving to bring new thinking to Christian laymen in this country: The National Institute for Catholic-Jewish Education in Chicago and the new Ecu- menical Institute for Jewish-Christian Studies in South- field. The AJCommittee was also a sponsor and the pro- gram was funded by Detroit's Samuel and Isabelle Fried- man Charitable Trust. At a press conference before the evening pro- gram, Rabbi Tanenbaum described how his ancestors in Eastern Europe feared the Christian "Holy Week" leading up to Good Friday, and the many pogroms that have been inspired by Christians shouting "Christ Killers" at the Jews. Fr. Pawlikowski responded that Christian education has made progress in recent years, "but not all the problems are gone." He said Christian education must reach the point where it is generally recognized that "Jesus was not a loner against the entire Jewish community.
