10th Anniversary

OPENING of A NEW BOUTIQUE

TEL AVIV — Zeev Bo-
nen, managing director of
the Rafael Armament De-
velopment Authority, told
reporter's this week that Is-
rael"s success against Sy-
rian MiGs last summer was
partially attributable to a
new air-to-air missile.
Israel reportedly shot
down 87 Syrian jets while
losing none last June dur-
ing the fighting in Lebanon.
The new missile, called
the Python, is effective from
500 yards to nine miles. Its
infrared detectors enable it
to be fired from any angle,
freeing Israeli pilots from
having to maneuver behind
enemy planes to allow a
missile's heat-seeking de-
vices to be effective.
Bonen said the Python is
comparable to the U.S.
Sidewinder and superior to
the French Magic, the only
missiles in its class.
