He explained that while Jews, including some rabbis, have partici- pated in joint meetings with Evangelicals in recent years, this was the first under the "official framework" of a rabbinical organization. At a press conference held at the Shoreham Hotel after the embassy meeting, Weiss said the RCA had initiated the meeting in an effort to develop a joint agenda with the Evangelicals. While none was developed at this meeting, it will be at future meetings in order to demon- strate grass roots support for Israel, Weiss said. Rabbi Gilbert Klaper- man, president of the RCA, said the two groups feel they can "create sig- nificant, positive real pressure" among grass roots religious Ameri- cans so that the White House, where, he said, President Reagan was a "real friend of Israel" and the State Depart- ment "will respond as it should." Ed McAteer, president of the Religious Round Table, aid Evangelicals support Israel not only for `spiritual" reasons but be- ause it is in the interests of he United States to do so. oth the Jews and the hristians at the press con- erence voiced concern at w hat they said was "pres- ure" by the Reagan Ad- m inistration on Israel over ebanon and the West ank. Dr. John Walvoord, resident of the Dallas Th eological Seminary, said Is rael must maintain erusalem as its capital. He cl aimed it would be "r idiculous" to expect Israel to give up the West Bank. A ccording to Walvoord, that w ould be like asking the .S. to give up Maryland to th e Soviet Union after w hich the USSR could train it s missiles "against our ca pital." Weiss said that today's me eting came out of talks he had with McAteer. The Re v. Adrian Rogers, of Na shville, former president of the Southern Baptist Co nvention, stressed that in the meetings the Jews and Ch ristians, while support- ing common goals, would not "compromise religious bel iefs." K laperman said that pe rhaps Reform and Co nservative rabbis will be asked to join the dia logue. But he noted tha t this, first meeting wa s a gathering of two Stevens Cited by Yeshiva U. He said Orthodox Jews and Evangelicals may in the future also unite on other issues but it was too soon now to say what these are. The effort to increase grass roots support for Is- rael will include the various publications of the people involved as well as Jews speaking at Jewish meet- ings of Evangelicals and Evangelicals speaking at Jewish meetings. One of the major efforts will be on the Christian television and radio pro- grams. John Cummuta, op- erations manager of the Na- tional Religious Broadcas- ters, said his member- stations are watched and listened to by more than 50 million Americans. Some of the Orthodox rabbis are ex- pected to appear on these programs. is estimated that there were 10 million Jews in the Middle Ages, before the per- secutions of the Crusades, in the areas of the old Roman Empire. •••••••• • • • * •••••••• •-• l'OM ERSET ••••••••• THEATRE • • . • detroit's Original dinner theatre 41.14............ .. 00 s•••• ■•••■■■ •••••••• •••••• • • Auredo Jimmy Launce PROductions, Inc. • • presents • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • ANY WEDNESDAY A Comedy by Muriel Resnik Performances: Wed.
