— PROGRAM
the late pope for 40 years.
Sr. Lehnert said the pope
wrote the condemnation
after hearing that some
40,000 people in the Nether-
lands had been sent to con-
centration camps because of
a pastoral letter written
against the Nazis by a group
of Dutch bishops.
"He (the pope) prepared a
protest, handwritten, in Ita-
lian, four crowded pages,"
Sr. Lehnert said. "But at a
certain point he came into
the kitchen and, after hav-
ing explained the matter to
me, asked me to turn on the
gas stove in order to burn
it."
Sr. Lehnert said she
encouraged the pope to
save the pages, "so that,
once the war was over,
the thoughts of the pon-
tiff in this regard would
be known." The pope
however, insisted on
burning the document,
citing the possibility of
further retribution by
Hitler if the letter was
discovered.
Pius XII has been
criticized by both Jewish
and non-Jewish historians
for his lack of concern for
the plight of Jews during
the Holocaust.
