But French authorities dose to the investigation of the restaurant attack remain skeptical that it was a neo-Nazi opera- tion. A senior police offi- cial has been quoted as saying that undisclosed evidence and other leads point to a "Palestinian connection. Attention was drawn to Kexel because he looks "very much like" a com- posite drawing of one of the terrorists based on descrip- tions by witnesses to the restaurant attack. On the other hand, witnesses shown actual photographs of Kexel failed to identify him. Jean-Louis Bruguiere, the French magistrate who heads the investigation of the restaurant attack, has asked British and French authorities for full reports on the terrorists in their custody. Le Monde reported that the magistrate is still convinced that the ter- rorists involved came from the Middle East but is look- ing into the possibility of neo-Nazi collaboration with them. French authorities are said to believe that the neo-Nazis provided the ac- tual hit squad with arms and logistic support. The French also confirm West German press reports that some of the terrorists arrested last week visited Lebanon on several occa- sions and were in the West European countries at the time anti-Semitic attacks took place. West German .newspap- ers said some of the neo- Nazis underwent terrorist training at Palestine Liber- ation Organization camps , in Lebanon. Decision to Retain Sharon Causes Liberal Party Split JERUSALEM (JTA) — A split is developing in the Liberal Party wing of Likud over Sunday's Cabinet deci- sion to retain former De- fense Minister Ariel Sharon as a member of the Ministe- rial Defense Committee. A meeting of the Liberal Party Knesset caucus was demanded by former Cabinet Minister Yitzhak Berman to hear from Liber- als sitting in the Cabinet as to why they failed to oppose Premier Menahem Begin's proposal to keep Sharon on the key committees. Sharon was forced to re- sign as defense minister as a result of the findings of the commission of inquiry into the Beirut refugee camps massacre which the Cabinet accepted in full. Berman, a former energy minister, an- nounced that when the issue of Sharon's contin- ued membership on the Defense Committee is raised in the Knesset ple- nary he would vote with- the opposition. Another Liberal MK, Dror Seigerman, said he would do the same. The de- cision to retain Sharon was adopted by the Cabinet at Begin's insistence. The vote was 6-1. A number of minis- ters abstained. Begin's position surprised observers inasmuch as it was assumed that he was not averse to seeing Sharon out of the frontline of policy-makers.
