LISTENING
POST

DECEMBER, 1982, Na-
tional Dry Goods Co. on
Trumbull was ready to close
operations after 62 years in
the wholesale distributing
and retail business . . . of
name brand and designer
clothing and accessories for
men, women and children.
In 1921, Max Kwaslo had
opened what could be the
forerunner of almost all dis-
count setups.
But the closing never
happened . . . Three gents, a
young salesman who
worked for Max during a
period following World War
II, Iry Lichtman and Max's
son-in-law, Phil Goodman
(married to daughter Julie)
who spent 18 years with the
company, have returned to
run the operation with Alex
Karp . . . investing over $2
million in continuing what
had become a Detroit land-
mark for so many people.
Designer and name brand
clothing isn't the only thing
National Dry Goods is
known for . . . there's
t-shirts, underwear,
hosiery, jeans etc. Quite a
respected operation.
