The Hill of Evil Counsel"
by Amos Oz (Bantam
Windstone) is not your
everyday escapist novel. It
is a book to be read slowly,
so that the beauty of lan-
guage, which comes close to
being poetry, can be fully
enjoyed. A small sample of
the author's lyrical words:
"But all the bells were doing
was to call the darkness
dark."
Oz is the most renowned
novelist in Israel today. His
book does not seem to have
lost any of its sensitivity or
meaning its translation
from the Hebrew.
For most Americans, un-
familiar with the Jerusalem
of the 1940s under the
British Mandate, the book
makes the city and its in-
habitants come alive.
One of the main char-
acters, the boy Uri, binds
the three stories into a
continuous flow. His
childhood in Jerusalem
portends the great
changes to take place in
that ancient city, combin-
ing the reverence of the
old with the strength of
the new.
The early settlers of
Jerusalem, who are Jews
from all parts of the world,
do not just read about the
politics of their country in
the morning newspaper.
Their everyday lives are in-
volved with illegal refugees,
the imminent preparedness
for war, and above all, the
hopes and plans for a free
Hebrew state.
The men in the book are
portrayed as dreamers, tal-
kers, thinkers, not men of
action. It is with the youth
that the future lies. They

model themselves after an
image of the pioneering
hero. Oz describes them in
this manner:
"Perhaps they imagine
that Jewish children who
take on a bronze color (from
sunbathing) cease to be
Jewish children and become
Hebrews. A new, tough
race, no longer timid and
persecuted . . . no longer
with sweaty palms and eyes
blinking through thick
lenses. Total liberation
from the fear of persecution
by means of this colorful
camouflage."
The book has a subtle,
erotic quality unlike the
brash clinical descrip-
tiveness found in modern
American novels. The
events are depicted in a
hazy, dream-like manner.
Sometimes it is difficult
to separate fantasy from
reality.
Everyone will recognize
the humanity of the char-
acters in the stories; the
universality of the loss of
innocence, a wife's deser-
tion of her husband, a dying
man's dream of a lost love.
"The Hill of Evil Counsel"
is a beautifully written, in-
sightful, unusual book.
