Barbie was picked up
from U.S. Army intelli-
gence (CIC) in 1948 and
used by the CIA as a "con-
tract agent" for nearly three
decades.
(According to ABC-TV
News network on Friday,
Nov. 11, one Robert Wilson,
a' self-admitted interna-
tional jewel thief, knew
Barbie in Bolivia. Wilson
alleged that Barbie "freely
confessed" his war crimes as
well as his involvement
with the CIA. According to
Wilson, Barbie claims he vi-
sited such American cities
as New Orleans, Miami and
San Francisco during the
course of his work with the
CIA. Barbie traveled freely
on a Bolivian diplomatic
passport. The CIA refused
comment.)
During the same period
he allegedly contracted
work with the CIA, Barbie
— acting at the strategic di-
rection of die Spinne — was
also a "consultant" to Latin
American military dic-
tatorships enjoying the
support of the United
States.
In that capacity, Barbie
advised those repressive
regimes on the use of
"death squads" and
other forms of political
terror.
Arriving in Bolivia in
May 1951, Barbie found a
most accommodating at-
mosphere in which to carry
out his work. For years the
Bolivian economy had been
dominated by German in-
vestment interests and the
large German colony there.
As far back as the 1920s,
officers of the German Gen-
eral Staff trained Bolivian
armies.
Ernst Roehm — the Nazi
putschist, German Army
officer and later commander
of Hitler's SA (storm
Troops) — is an example of
such Nazi influence.
(Roehm was murdered in
1934 when Hitler purged
the SA in favor of an ascen-
dent SS.)

Linked to Nazis

.Barbie, according to my
own sources, quickly or-
ganized "coordinated" ac-
tivities with the large Nazi
concentrations in Argen-
tina, Brazil, Chile and
Paraguay, where fascist
military
dictatorships
reigned.
In Bolivia, Barbie trained
a secret police force and na-
tional police along the lines
of the Gestapo he ran in
France during the
Holocaust.
He was granted Boli-
vian citizenship in 1957.
His name was linked to
several notorious politi-
cal killings in 1964, 1972
and 1976.
Barbie enjoyed the full
backing of the government
of Colonel Hugo Banzer
Suarez, which in the 1970s
blocked all attempts to
extradite Barbie for his war
crimes in Europe.
Col. Banzer provided
Barbie with a uniformed
