In his article, Urban said that the appar- ent "Philo-Semitism" of a modern Cracow periodical was motivated by "a desire to make up for the sins of the pre-war (religious publica- tions) Mali Dziennik and Ryceiz Niepokalanej," of which Kolbe was the editor. "One now," Urban added, "has to bow down before the editor of that filth." Urban's article was strongly denounced by both the Vatican Radio broad- casting in Polish and by the Catholic daily Slowo Powszechne. The Vatican charged that the article's reference to Kolbe was "in- sulting to his memory" and "all the more incomprehen- sible, since an official dele- gation from the Polish People's Republic took part in the canonization cere- monies," which took place last October. The Catholic daily stated that Urban "should know that it is FULLY INSURED MUSED 352.4390 MEMBER , MICHIGAN PEST NNTROL ASSOCIATION FOR PROMPT SERVICE CASE CONTROL GUARANTEES TO GET RID OF WHAT'S BUGGING YOU! Shortly after Kolbe's ele- vation to sainthood, some of his pre-war writings were brought to light in which various anti-Jewish refer- ences were cited. In one such instance, Kolbe wrote he considered freemasons "as an organized clique of fanatical Jews who want to destroy the church." In his defense, church spokesmen have referred to passages from Kolbe's collected works which indicate his opposition to violent anit- Semitism. Capucci's Actions Spark Israeli Complaint to Vatican ROME — The Israeli gov- ernment has formally ex- pressed to the Vatican its concern with the anti- Israeli activities of Ar- chbishop Hilarion Capucci, the Syrian prelate who was released from an Israeli prison in 1977 following a papal promise that the ar- chbishop would not act in a way "detrimental" to the state of Israel. The Israeli complaint was contained in a letter sent to the Vatican last week. The action followed an appear- ance by Capucci on an Ita- lian television program in which the archbishop em- phatically re-affirmed his support for the Palestine Liberation Organization. Capucci is a member of the Palestine National Council, the PLO's highest body. In 1974, Capucci was sen- tenced by a Jerusalem court to 12 years in prison after large quantities of weapons, ammunition and explosives were discovered in his car. A 1977 letter from Pope Paul VI to Israeli President Ep- hriam Katzir prompted Is- rael to release the ar- chbishop. The Israeli government has frequently urged the Vatican to restrict the ar- chbishop, who was born in Syria, to religious tasks and prevent him from engaging in open political activity throughout -Europe.
