Numerology—the Gematria of Hebrew Letters

Numerology as a Gemat-
ria, as a method of measur-
ing the numerical value of
Hebrew letters, holds fasci-
nation for Jewish students.

Scholars have dabbled in it
and have made it a science.

Marcus disclaims credit for
it and informs the editor:
"I sent the numerological
data to Leonard about the
Hebrew and Yiddish One.
Of course, it is not original;
Jews have known that in
Hebrew and Yiddish, God is
one and the number is 13."
The text of the submitted
numerological tract follows:
The word God in Yid-
dish is pronounced 'Got.'
This in the Hebrew al-
phabet is spelled Gimmel,
Aleph and Tet. Gimmel is
the third letter in the al-
phabet, Aleph is the first
and Tet is the ninth.
When you add them all up
together you get 13. So, 13
is a divine number be-
cause it also means God.
"When you use the es-
pression Shema, the
English translation is
"Hear 0 Israel the Lord our
God the Lord is one."
"In Hebrew it is "Shema
Yisroael Adonai Elohanu
Adonai Echod."
"Echod means one and
when you spell Echod in
Hebrew it's A H D. Here
again A is Aleph, H is Hess
and D Daled. Aleph is the
first letter in the Hebrew
alphabet, Hess is the eighth
and Daled is the fourth.
When you add those up
again you have 1-8-4, equal-
ling 13.
"The moral is that
God's name is 13 or that
13 stands for God's name
and that God is one and
one also is spelled out to
number 13. Obviously it

its conference in Spain last
week, PLO representative
Nasserel Hamuda attacked
the Israeli left-wing Mapam
Party which, he said, was
"indefinitely more danger-
ous than the Likud."
Mapam supports self-
determination. for the
Palestinian people, a
Jordanian-Palestinian con-
federation and the right of
