THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Jewish Students Reverting UJA Mission Generates to Traditional Family Values $2 Million in Pledges PHOENIX (JTA) — Though less than half of American Jewish families are intact today as a unit, young Jewish adults are re- verting back to traditional family structures, accord- ing to Jewish sociologist Yehuda Rosenman. Rosenman, national di- rector of the American Jewish Committee's Jewish Family Center in New York, said despite the alarming breakdown of the American Jewish family in the last 15 years, the crisis is turning around. Rosenman's team re- cently interviewed some 1,200 American Jewish col- lege students at 14 cam- puses nationwide. "Ninety- two percent of those inter- viewed definitely planned to get married and defi- nitely planned to have chil- dren," Rosenman said, "Many were absolutely op- posed to having one child." Rosenman blamed much of the breakdown of the Jewish family on outside influences. "First, economic, educa- tion and emotional inde- pendence and maturity of women. Second, the continued diminution of Jewish law and values on individual Jews. Third, the impact of the sexual revolution, of new values placing the emphasis on the individual's happi- ness, pleasure and ful- fillment." But the same influences are causing a return to Judaism, Rosenman said. "After a short odyssey into the 'me' experience, lots of kids are finding themselves feeling empty, alienated, lonely and purposeless," he said. Rosenman said Jewish synagogues and organiza- tions have to stop molding their membership and serv- ices for couples. "We have to start thinking about people," he said. Rosenman's study shows that unaffiliated young Jews return to Judaism through the opportunity for study and practical experi- ence with tradition. "In the past," he said, "most Jewish institutions believed the only way to at- tract young people was through social activities . . . parties, dances and outings." He added: "No more. We have to start building substantive educa- tional programs with origi- nal texts, where people can work through their tradi- tion. NEW YORK (JTA) — Re- sponding to a stirring plea for unity by Israel's Prime Minister Menahem Begin at the concluding session, of the Jan. 31-Feb. 4 United Jewish Appeal Winter President's Mission, 150 American Jewish leaders announced 1983 pledges of $1,953,800 for the regular campaign, $450,250 for the Israel Special Fund and $374,450 for Project Re- newal. The regular campaign total represents a 26.4 per- cent increase over commit- ments from the same donors for the 1982 campaign. The article stated that kriah was required when the Sefer Torah was burnt whether or not it was inten- tional. The Shulkhan Arukh (Yoreh Dayeh . . . Chapter 340, paragraph 37) quotes the Gemara (Moed Katan page 26A) saying that one would tear his garment only if the Sefer Torah was burnt purposely. If however, there were an accidental fire there is no obligation to tear the garment. The reason for this is that the purposeful burning of the Sefer Torah is consid- ered to be a Hillul Hashem (desecration of g-d's name).
