Jerusalem and forged in the
trials of the young state of
Israel, the other emanating
from the diversity and
abundance of men and ideas
that America has succeeded
in synthesizing.
Not so long ago, one could
speak with admiration of
the intellectual and
spiritual rivalry between
the two Talmuds, of a bipo-
larity between Jerusalem
and Babylon. Certainly the
image is not fully applicable
to the current situation.
Yet, without forcing the
comparison, in the political
domain, America, which
appears to be the new Baby-
lon, retains something of
the ancient pre-eminence or
antique rivalry.
In its ideological com-
bat, Zionism has for
many years granted a
sort of status of extra-
territoriality to this
largest community of the
Diaspora, the natural re-
servoir for "the gathering
of the exiled." As if
America, nolens volens,
was not fundamentally a
place of exile.
In this respect, it is sig-
nificant that almost all of
the half-million Israelis
who have left Israel have
chosen New York or the

other large cities of the New
World. Without doubt, in
part because the "American
way of life" is almost the
unique model of society and
culture in contemporary Is-
rael, but also as a result of
the same sort of atavistic
step that caused thousands
of Jews fleeing Europe
around the turn of the cen-
tury to debark in the New
World.
Every Israeli government
since Ben Gurion has con-
sidered the American polit-
ical scene and American
public opinion as necessary
extension of all that could
guarantee the very exist-
ence of the Jewish state.
The current government is
simply continuing this ten-
dency by enlarging it.
Sometimes, Begin gives
priority to influencing
American opinion, and par-
ticularly American Jewish
opinion, over that of his own
country. Criticized by
numerous observers, this
approach which is, without
doubt, inscribed in a politi-
cal perspective, conforms,
above all, to his vision of the
Jewish people.
For many reasons, the de-
stiny of Israel is intimately
linked with that of the
United States. Europe is not
completely credible because
of its history and its present
interests. The Third World
has turned its back on Israel
and the Soviet Union has
adopted the most extremist
positions of the Arab camp.
The constant attach-
ment of the American
Administrations to Is-
rael's existence and the
public's immense sym-
pathy for Israel's democ-
racy, despite recent vic-
issitudes, are undeniably
the work of American
Jews. Strengthened by
these achievements and
by their own unrelenting
support for Israel, they
now seem to be posing the
question of their rapport
with Israel in other
terms.
Large currents of Ameri-
can Judaism, and in par-
ticular the new generations,
no longer seem willing to
accept the choice between
unconditional support and
silent abstention, between
moral imperatives and
political requirements, be-
tween different forms of bi-
polarization.
' In any case, a growing
number of American Jews
intend to take up the chal-
lenge of striving toward a
harmonious synthesis of the
American Administration's
preoccupations as a super-
power and the vital inter-
ests of the state of Israel.
