THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Cardinal Will Aid Jewish Couple to Find Their Son By RABBI MARC H. TANENBAUM (A Seven Arts Feature) I recently reported on two elderly Polish Jews, Mr. and Mrs. Leon Erlichster, who have been agonizing since the end of World War II over trying to see their son, Lolek. He was raised as a Catholic monk after being taken from his parents dur- ing the war. _ For nearly 40 years, the HEART STOPPING VALUES c,"7 c 30%-40% OFF ALL HEARTS IN STOCK NOW TILL VALENTINE'S DAY JEWELERS 41I ZCOPS OF LATHRUP 28480 Southfield Rd., Lathrup Village, 424-8733 Tues.-Fri. 9-5, Sat. 9-4 Erlichsters made repeated visits to Poland to try to find their Lolek but Catholic and civil authorities denied them that right. At the par- ents' request, I wrote to Cardinal Jean-Marie Lus- tiger, the Archbishop of Paris and Primate of France, and asked him to intervene. Born himself of Polish Jewish parents who perished in Auschwiti, and converted as a youth to Catholicism; Cardinal Lus- tiger, I reasoned, would understand better than most. This week I received a reply from the Cardinal: "Your letter raises a mat- ter that seems to me to be particularly grave. I can assure you that I shall do everything to enable Mr. and Mrs. Erlichster to find their son, Lolek. I understand that the par- ents wish before their death to see their son who was lost for 40 years. It involves the honor of the Church to do everything to make this possible." " Cardinal Lustiger, now in Rome to receive his red hat, added: "After my arrival in Rome, I shall transmit a copy of your letter to Cardi- nal Glemp, Archbishop of Warsaw and Primate of Po- land. Furthermore,' I shall vigorously insist that he treat this matter as impor- tantly as I." — THE clothespORT MONDAY thru SATURDAY 10- 5 627 WEST NINE MILE RD. TEL AVIV (JTA) — A public opinion poll pub- lished by the Jerusalem Post shows strong bi- partisan opposition to Is- raeli arms sales to countries governed by dictatorships. He will also repor- tedly ask that South Africa lift the taxes, at least par- tially, on goods imported from Israel. South Africa imposed those taxes about a year ago. Aridor is also expected to request the expansion of fishing rights for Israeli boats in South African waters.
