▪ THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS J Danny Raskin's The Best of Everythingl A WHILE BACK, Tony Oddo was dining in the Re- gency Room of Las Vegas' Sands Hotel . . . Suddenly he exclaimed, "What am I thinking so much for? The name is right here." And so in 1975, The Re- gency Room restaurant lounge was born . . . owned by Tony Oddo and England's gift to America, Marina "Renee" Lowe .. . on 12 Mile just east of Van Dyke, across from the GM Tech Center. That's a classy name .. . and their place is one of the nicer neighborhood dining spots we've been to . . . Don't compare the prices to those at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas . . . not by a long shot ... In fact, the reasonable menu is hardly believable for such elegance, warmth and intimacy received with the very fine food . . . It's not a big place . . . now seating about 109 . . . When first built, it had 59 seats on two tiers and a 12-seater bar .. . A second room' seating 50 more was added in 1979. And for certain, the Sands has nobody like Joe Mann ... Can you ever think of being any- place where a fellow cooking at tableside leaves after his culinary expertise to play piano which he also does with much pleasant re- sults? Probably not . . . The Re- gency Room on Detroit's east side has been garner- ing much note as an excel- lent discovery . . . and in no small measure because of him . . . During the week he runs back and forth from piano to tableside cooking . . . On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, Joe and guitarist make up a duo. His left-handed deftness at sauteeing and tableside flaming are great touches at reasonable prices . . . And if there's something you want to hear on the piano, have your request ready when Joe leaves the keyboard to make your selections from the separate tableside menu. Our waitress, Pam Chan- dler, at The Regency Room since a year after it opened, is most proficient with her smiling, personable and ▪ courteous ways for good service. Joe mixed us a ous Caesar salad made manicotti (homemade Italian crepe) ... and veal pie- r cante sauteed in butter ... and Banana Flambe P. dessert with strawber- ries, cherry, sliced al- monds and whipped cream ... Then if some- body wanted to hear a tune on the piano ... off he went to tickle the ivories with as much de- ftness as his tableside ▪ cooking ability. The Regency Room here with its soft lights, dark woods, elegant-looking wallpaper and stucco ceil- ing, has become a big favo- rite on Detroit's east side .. . but many people from the northwest area who have discovered it also ride out for a good meal at this popu- lar place . . . (lobster dinner $8.95, Delmonico steak dinner for two $12.95). Paintings on the wall are in good taste . . . and scenic views of London are on an overhang wall . . . The romantic setting is simple but choice . . . with no un- necessary frills. Joe is like a part of The Regency Room atmosphere . He does his tableside cooking with conscien- tiousness and pride . . . quietly and accurately without the use of flam- boyant show biz nonsense . . . The results of his inten- siveness are quite reward- ing. Owners Tony Oddo and Renee Lowe have both their native coun- tries represented on the menu ... Sicilian steak and English pub steak. Also, it isn't surprising to see Renee go into the kitchen and make York- shire pudding or Shepherd's pie. The Regency Room really isn't that far away . . . one block east of Van Dyke on 12 Mile . . . a neighborhood restaurant lounge with the touch of class elegance .. . cloth tablecloths and nap- kins, candlelight warmth and cozy atmosphere. People like The Regency Room . . . its quiet intimacy is a find . . . open seven days a week . . . and certainly a nice place to know about. MYSTERY OF the Min- nie's Seafood coming to former site of Raven Gallery on Greenfield and 12 Mile has been solved . . . It'll be owned by Jim Brunetti, who had Brunetti's after Hugo's . . . at the present site of Ex- calibur on Northwestern Hwy. Projected opening is the end of February with fresh seafood from live lobster in tank to raw bar. And so from the suc- cessful Raven Gallery to dud Bar-B-Q House of Southfield comes a re- spected restaurateur who knows what he's doing. RECENT BLACK TIE opening of St. Regis Hotel on W. Grand Blvd. as a Rank Hotels Ltd. of London operation (formerly J. Ar- thur Rank), gave folks an opportunity to see what at one time was probably among the most elegant hotels built . . . Originally opened in 1966, St. Regis was the most expensive hotel constructed in the U.S. then . . . costing* $39,000 per room . . . The six-story hotel combines limestone and glazed brick with wrought iron orna- mental grillwork . . . as French Regency period architecture is char- acterized by the finials atop its building. After hors d'oeuvres and Friday, February 11, 1983 33 We Have A Hunch ... You're Gonna Love Our Brunch! cocktails in the lounge, a five-course European-style dinner was created by Chef Jan Emous . . . accom- panied by four wines. Sensational marinated salads...steaming soup...bagels and all the fixins' (like lots & lotsa lox)... bountiful breakfast favorites, including blintzes and eggs...hot entrees to delight lunch lovers...delectable desserts...the seemingly never-ending selection speaks for itself! The Michigan Inn's Sunday Brunch. Sumptuous. Satisfying. Savor it this Sunday.
