THE.DETROITIWISH HEWS': FAITH OPEC's Failure a Good Omen for the .U.S. By JOSEPH SHAPIRO By MORRIS AMITAY The quotation,. "Have faith in the Lord every day" Brings to mind that men and women must pray This in itself has a far reaching hand - With the knowledge they surely understand Having faith in one's self has a tendency of awareness Bringing men and women to preparedness To take note of themselves, when an event arises Which can bring to them quite often a few surprises Faith recognizes no "religion" it is a strong belief By believing in its power, it can offer relief Circumstances can, develop when least expected That's why faith is always respected What is faith, what does it mean Its true meaning can often be seen Men and women of themselves they give To others that are in need, so that they may live. School Teaching Creationism Michigan Superinten- dent for Public Instruction Philip Runkel presented a report this week which said that the Western School District in Jackson County was improperly teaching as science the Biblical theory of creation. At the same time, the state approved the distribu- tion by the Hudsonville School District of a two- page handout entitled, "A Biblical Account of the Past." The handout is given to 10th grade biology stu- 20 YEAR REUNION 1963 Grads of SOUTHFIELD HIGH Please Contact Jim Yaeger P.O. Iraqis Buy French Missile PARIS (JTA) — France has agreed to sell Iraq 20 Exocet missiles similar to those used effectively by Argentina against the British Navy during the Falkland Islands war, and six Super Standard combat planes to deliver them, ac- cording to the usually well- informed French weekly Le Canard Enchaine. Diplomatic sources con- firmed the report, saying it fitted in with France's over- all pro-Iraqi and pro- Egyptian policy. FOR MEN ON THE BOARDWALK Orchard Lake Rd. DAYS A WEEK Nobody diamo for less WASHINGTON — OPEC'slailure to agree on oil production cutbacks is one of the more positive de- velopments that has oc- curred recently. Yet, many "experts" would have us be- lieve that lower oil prices would be catastrophic to the world financial system and our own economy. The truth is, the only real losers from declining oil prices are oil producers themselves. American con- sumers will benefit — and so will our. nation's foreign policy as it frees itself from the threat of the "oil weapon." After all, if it's bad for the Saudis, can it really be that bad after all? There was some negative news on the energy inde- pendence front with the Administration's an- nounced intention to cut back on filling our Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Now is not the time to let down our guard against future oil embargoes. Senator. Bill Bradley of New Jersey, who has been an effective and articulate leader in getting the reserve filled, will undoubtedly lead any Congressional at- tempts to increase the fill rate. * * * Senator Ernest "Fritz" ilollings (D-S.C.) is the next candidate in our series of brief, analyse's of the Presidential hopefuls. The 61-year-old former gover- nor was elected to the Se- nate in. 1966 and has used his Budget, Appropriations and Commerce Committee assignments to gain a measure of national promi- nence. Although he has never taken the lead on foreign policy issues, he was sup- portive of a number of pro- Israel initiatives in the early 1970s, but by the mid-1970s he was talking about Israeli "intransi- gence" and refused to sign the "Letter of '76." While supporting foreign .aid bills containing assis- tance for Israel, Hollings was one of only a handful of Senators to attend a 1976 meeting with a PLO repre- sentative hosted by then Sen. James Abourezk, an outspoken critic of Israel. Later, Hollings began vot- ing against foreign aid, and in 1978, voted for the sale of F-15s to Saudi Arabia. But in 1981, he voted against the AWACS and related equipment for the Saudis. Since making known his desire to seek the Demo- Lansky Estate Totals $110,000 Shop around and compare. In a recent New York Times "op-ed" piece, "Israel, Despite Begin," Hollings called for greater appreciation of Israel's strategic importance to the U.S. Overall, Hollings' record on Israel must be rated as "mixed," making his more • recent statements less cred- ible. Normally, this South- ern long-shot candidacy would have been almost completely discounted — but the lesson of Jimmy Carter necessitates not writing Hollings off yet.
