tine signaled the birth of Is-
rael and her full-scale War
of Independence.
Although he headed the
Mandatory Administration
of Palestine during a period
.of mounting Jewish hostil-
ity to British rule, _Sir Alan
retained the respect of the
leadership of the Yishuv,
thanks to his straight- •
forward dealing and his
serene, decisive character.
This image was rein-
forced by his singular re-
fusal to be drawn into the
polemics between Israel's
supporters and detractors
which have raged ever since
and despite_ the initial le-
gacy of bitterness which
Britain left behind in Pales-
tine.
As High Commissioner,
Cunningham had suc-
ceeded another distin-
guished British soldier,
Field Marshall Viscount
Gort (1944-1945) — re-
garded by Palestinian
Jewry as one of the most
sympathetic men to hav e
held that office since the
days of Sir Herbert
Samuel (1920-1925), its
first incumbent.
Cunninghami, had ach-
ieved fame as commander of
the southern invading force
in the brilliant British of-
fensive in Abyssinia in
1941, which liberated that
country from the Italians.
Soon after that campaign,
Cunningham was given
command of the British
Eighth Army in the western
desert, where Rommel's Af-
rika Korps was preparing to
invade Egypt. He was re-
lieved of the command by
Gen. Auchinlek, the sup-
reme Middle East oomman-
der, who felt he was being
too defensive in his military
plans.
Other High Commission-
ers in Palestine were Field
Marshal Baron Plummer
(1925-1928); Sir John
Chancellor (1928-1931); Sir
Arthur Wauchope (1931-
1938); and Sir Harold Mac- ,
michael (1938-1944).
TEL AVIV (ZINS) — In
1981-1982, Israel Aircraft
Industries had total sales of
$280 million, with $52 mil-
lion of that total going to 40
different countries.
Aguda Task Force Fights
Israel Religious Pluralism
NEW YORK (JTA) — A
special Task Force to fight
the efforts of Reform and
Conservative Judaism to
win recognition in Israel
was created at- a meeting
last week of the Vaad
Hanhala of Agudath Israel
of America.
The meeting mapped out
a broad range of plans to
"mobilize American Or-
thodox Jewry,to save Israel
from the tragic conse-
quences of transporting to
the Holy Land the concept of
recognizing .`three wings of
Judaism' which has been a,
prime factor in the spiritual
assimilation rampant in the
United States today."
The meeting, chaired by
Rabbi Shiomo Op-
penheimer, also urged the
Agudath Israel in Israel to
forge complete unity within
its ranks in order for the
movement to continue
using its political clout with
the government to thwart
the "expansionist plans" of
the Reform and Conserva-
tive groups.
The organization's
BGU Associates
Re-Elect Arnow
ranking body acted after
a detailed presentation
about the issue was made
by Rabbi Moshe Sherer,
president of the Ameri-
can Agudath Israel
movement, and Rabbi
Nosson Scherthan, co-
chairman of Agudah's
Commitee on Torah and-
Ideology Projects.
Using a series of docu-
ments, they demonstrated
how the - Reform and Con-
servative movements have
in recent months "displayed
unprecedented militancy in
an accelerated campaign to
abolish the sole jurisdiction
on religious rites enjoyed by
the Orthodox rabbinate in
Israel."
They expressed even
greater concern over the
methods used by the Con-
servative group to win offi-.
vial religious status in Is-
rael, because the Conserva-
tive's "mask of tradi-
tionalism could dope the
unwary Israeli public, ig-
norant about their rejection
of the divine origin of Torah,
into perceiving .Conser-
vatism as an authentic ex-
pression of Judaism."
The Agudath Israel
organization announced
that it will soon publish ex-
tensive ' informational
material to "clarify how the
deviationist groups of Con-
servative and Reform by
starring masses away from
classical Judaism, repre-
sent a clear and present
danger to Jewish survival."
