SEE THE NEW
he Best of Everything
(Continued from Page 35)
Very silly and erroneous
feedback in Southfield elec-
toral seats is that delicates-
sens are sandwich shops .. .
not full-service restaurants
. . . This may have been true
many many years ago when
most delis were known as
carry-out operations only
. . . but not today.
They are just as much
full-service restaurants as
the conglomerates who can
easily buy a license and not
feel what to them is a mere
pittance . . . The small
– delicatessen-restaurant
folks who work their tails
off for years are much more
deserving than many
Johnny-come-lately chain
operations with an impres s
sive name.
As for delicatessen-
restaurants not being full-
service operations, what
was Darbys? . . . And how
many deli-restaurants in
New York can you go to that
don't serve beer, wine or
liquor? .. . Not too many in
Chicago or California
either.
Too bad some city fathers
and mothers can't see a good
glass of beer or wine with a
lot of those great dishes you
can only get at a
delicatessen-restaurant.
MAIL DEPT:. • • . "I re-
member when I, went to
work for Sam Boesky in the
Library Market in 1931. A
corned beef sandwich was
10 cents and I made $12 a
week. In 1933 my father
opened Oberman's O.K.
Restaurant at 615 Wood-
ward and we sold a
seven-course meal for 25
cents.
"In 1938, I went to work,
at Lefkofsky's Deli in the
Broadway Market — corned
beef was still 10 cents a
sandwich. When I married
Ada in 1941, I got a raise in
pay to $35 a week."

"My
mother-in-law,
Frieda Willner, just intro-
duced me and wife Robin to
a delightful restaurant,
`Pure and Simple,' on
Rochester Rd. at 1-75 in
Troy. The food is all pre-
pared right on the premises.
It is strictly vegetarian and
strictly delicious. There is
also a natural foods _grocery
store on the site.
